Narration wasn’t my favorite…
Revisado: 10-29-24
I respect the difficult job narrators have of bringing a world to live with only their voices, but there were so many mispronounced words and strange choices made here that regularly took me out of the story. One character has a weird, poorly executed, southern American accent for some reason. Words like “heretic” are consistently pronounced jarringly incorrectly. Voice tone and cadence choices were sometimes verging on cartoonish. The story and style of the writing weren’t my favorite either, but the narration was what made this experience disappointing enough to write a review about for me. Again, there are so many characters here that it couldn’t have been an easy task, but at minimum, I wish that the narrator had visited Forvo to get pronunciation guidance on a few words…

Historia
Conventional wisdom suggests English is going to the dogs, that bad grammar, slang, and illogical constructions signal a decline in standards of usage - to say nothing of the corruption wrought by email and text messages. But English is a complicated, marvelous language. Far from being a language in decline, English is the product of surprisingly varied linguistic forces, some of which have only recently come to light. And these forces continue to push English in exciting new directions.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

This was a delightful listen. Dr. McWhorter narrates in a jovial and personable tone, giving great examples at every turn. I listened to this at the gym and in my car for the majority of the time, so I have not yet delved into the accompanying pdf supplements. This course is accessible, enjoyable, and deeply interesting for anyone with a love of language.
