Good book, but grim
Revisado: 05-13-21
I am a Connie Willis fan and this is a favorite. Warning - the details of what the plague does to the body is on the graphic side. Good story of time travel and two raging illnesses. The narrator has a halting manner of speech that is annoying. You get used to it, but you will avoid her in the future. Next time I will just read the his book

Very entertaining after a slow start
Revisado: 02-22-20
I really liked Scott Brick’s reading, I am familiar with him from Clive Cussler’s books. Speaking of Cussler this book is quite reminiscent of that author’s style. The story was imaginative and fun without overly descriptive killing, sex and profanity, which I appreciated. I do think some tighter editing would make the plot development more understandable when the story lines merge. Or maybe it’s just me. Still, really enjoyed this book, I would recommend it to fans of Cussler or anyone needing a good vacation read. I am looking forward to book two.

Historia
It's 1194, and Sir Faucon de Ramis, the shire's newly appointed keeper of the pleas, must do his duty and make an official declaration of the cause of a miller's death. Saddled with a clerk who names Faucon his "penance", the shire's first crowner must thread the tangled relationships between the sheriff, the village of Priors Holston, and the priory that once ruled it. As a simple task takes a turn to the political, what seems obvious isn't, and what appears safe turns out to be more dangerous than he could imagine.

Entertaining medieval mystery
Revisado: 02-06-20
If you like Brother Cadfael, you will likely enjoy this book. I enjoyed characters and how the story developed. I think I really appreciated the length of the book most of all. Short, engrossing and to the point. Looking forward to the second in the series.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Intriguing premise
Revisado: 10-28-19
I found the story imaginative and engaging for being so short. I am a Zachary Quinto fan so that was helpful. The only negative for me was the language sprinkled through out. Also, acts of murder happen rather casually. That is understandable based on the premise, but one of the crimes in particular was intense. Understand please that I am somewhat sensitive so it may not bother the average listener.

At Michaelhouse, Matthew Bartholomew is training new physicians when the body of a friar is found in the massive chest that the university uses to store precious documents. While investigating, Bartholomew stumbles across a derelict church being used as a meeting place for the mysterious sect he believes is at the heart of a web of blackmail.

Good historical fiction read
Revisado: 08-19-19
The story starts slowly and you need to pay attention or get lost in all the characters. The historical detail about the level filth people endured in 14th century may be accurate but it also feels distracting. Still-Matthew and Micheal are a very likeable team and the story pick up steam resulting in a satisfying if tangled conclusion

Enjoyable story, but reader is not the best
Revisado: 07-02-17
I read this because I enjoy the Cadfael mysteries by Ellis Peters. It was a good story with likable characters. I really want to listen to other books in the series, however, the reader was a bit tiresome. She did not do a great job differentiating between characters. Still is you like historical mysteries, you should give this a listen
