Gripping story
Revisado: 07-15-24
I like the pace of the story, although the world building seemed to rush by and much was very unclear in the beginning, but don't worry that is intentional. The mechanics of the world are supposed to be unclear to the main character. The performance was good, I got used to the narrator eventually. I don't know that I can pin point exactly what about it wasn't excellent, Maybe it's just my preference, I found it difficult to pay attention to some scenes especially when multiple characters were involved. Although her performance of emotionual scenes was quite good actually. I'm hooked now, so I'll see how it developed across the series.

Historia
No one survived the last battle unscathed. Flint is angry at the world, Jaxon is turning into something I don't recognize, and Hudson has put up a wall I'm not sure I'll ever break through. Now war is coming, and we're not ready. We're going to need an army to have any hope of winning. But first, there are questions about my ancestors that need answers. Answers that might just reveal who the real monster is among us. And that's saying something in a world filled with bloodthirsty vampires, immortal gargoyles, and an ancient battle between two gods.

plot holes
Revisado: 05-20-24
This character is very relatable in the first two books, but as this is a coming of age story, you expect growth and improvement after the heroine has been through the wringer on this exact thing several times. By the third and fourth book, if she hasn't improved and is still surprised, she's just dumb. I'll overall gloss over most of the belabored first person narrative of this series. It has been a fun ride, but this book has some sloppy plot holes. *Spoiler*if you flat out expect and explicitly state someone will go back on their contract, why act so incredulous when it happens? Why refuse to fight a guard due to threat of death if you believe the magical contract will prevent you from being killed? If a magical contract is binding at all, how could that guard even draw blood, which is unequivocally a harm to your physical body? Additionally, after being fooled 2+ times over exacting nature of fulfillment of magical contracts wouldn't you take a minute to stop stressing about all the inane things you've repeated a million times and try to logically construct wording that closes obvious loopholes like torture, imprisonment, etc. ? Character flatly ignores her talents and powers that would help in certain situations for no explained reason, then later uses them like no big deal. SMH it's frustrating.

Great performance
Revisado: 06-08-23
This series is great. This book is the second installment. The first book was much longer, but not really concluded. This book feels like a half of an ending to the last book and an intro to the next part of the story. Still it's well written and funny at times. very entertaining.

Mystery never pays out
Revisado: 05-25-23
I am a fan of this series, but this is the first book that sort of didn't deliver. Maybe because it's set outside of Needsville, or maybe because I enjoy the strong female lead characters more. The ending was also not satisfying... at all.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Great start to an interesting series
Revisado: 05-20-23
I'm a fan of the world building and storyline. I agree with other reviews about the narrator. The narrator was obviously sick and it took away from the performance significantly. I wonder who quality controlled this?

Historia
Jack Diller is just one more struggling actor on the road to nowhere. He’s got an agent who barely remembers his name, his ex-girlfriend has hooked up with a Silicon Valley dude, and the milk in his fridge is so far past its sell-by date it’s historic. The only way Jack can scrape together a bare existence is by delivering food to exactly the types of successful people he wishes he could be. Then, one day, a very strange audiobook shows up on his phone.
