Historia
The murder of jazz musician and social activist Markus Peña doesn’t come as a surprise to his estranged sisters. Melinda and Emily Peña know their controversial brother had enemies. After all, even they hadn’t spoken to Markus since their mother’s funeral two years ago. Who killed Markus? Was it someone trying to keep his latest protest song from publication? Was it the powerful and secretive uncle of his ex-girlfriend Rebecca? Or was it one of the other women Markus had callously abandoned?

Juvenile, Boring and Repetitive
Revisado: 07-28-23
I would have to say this is one of the most difficult books to plough through to the end. The structure of the story is an absolute mess and constantly repeats the same premises. It appears that it was all geared towards one purpose which makes this one trick pony. The performance was equally bad with a childish depiction of the characters, especially the main one. Disappointing.

Historia
Beginning with opium, the “joy plant,” which has been used for 10,000 years, Thomas Hager tells a captivating story of medicine. His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

Utterly Engrossing
Revisado: 06-28-23
Such an engrossing book that had me captivated from the start. The topic and terminology could be detailed at times but I found them to be suited to the story and message that was being delivered. Some reviewers indicated that the author had strong personal views but that didn't bother me. I could also relate to the story as I'm a user of some of the medications that were featured and explained. All in a great piece of work and highly recommended.
