a relaxing listen
Revisado: 01-13-24
I liked the story and enjoyed it pretty well. Having read two other Susanna Kearsley books, I felt it was a little bit formulaic, but did enjoy listening.
Ine thing I found annoying was that the narration seemed to be pieced together. There were points in the reading where it felt like one or two words had been inserted in the middle of a sentence, as the tone of the narrator's voice was completely different. Several other times it felt as if it was full sentences that were edited. I suppose some of this is unavoidable, however I noticed it in this reading more than any other I listen to before.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Expected better
Revisado: 01-18-23
The narration was very good, but for an award-winning book, I expected a more compelling storyline. To me, the characters seemed thin. Their backstories could have been more fleshed out and more descriptive scenes of excitement throughout the story, both in the conflict scenes and in the presentation of new characters.
Also, I don't think the use of the f word and sexual descriptions added much to the story. These situations could have been described without this explicit content, making the book appropriate for a younger audience. Unfortunately, I and the bookseller did not realize/disclose this when I gave a text copy to my 13-year-old daughter before I listened to it.

Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes. As such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Why the F Word?
Revisado: 04-28-22
Minus a few instances of the F-word, this would be a great book for tweens and older. I felt was completely unnecessary and could easily be replaced or omitted. Shame on the author, really. Simply unnecessary use of an increasingly over-utilized vulgarity.
I enjoyed the story of magic and the character development of Kell and Lila. Lila was definitely my favorite.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Not what I expected. Better.
Revisado: 06-29-20
Trevor Noah wrote an eloquent and detailed story about growing up in South Africa. I learned so much about apartheid from reading this book. I think most importantly, Trevor Noah provide a detailed account of both systemic racism and the trap of poverty that afflicts people across all races.
His mother is a beautiful and complicated person, and he gives her so much credit for the person he has become.
I expected this to be more of a humorous account, but it was a serious story. Trevor Noah certainly shared plenty of funny moments, it is really a story how about his experience growing up in South Africa. I will re-listen to this book, as hearing it narrated in Trevor Noah's own voice is priceless.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Zoe Guire just talked to an elephant. Well, technically speaking, the elephant spoke to her, but either way it was weird and, as a rule, Zoe doesn't do weird. Except the thing is, when Zoe goes along on her mom's business trip to India, things get very weird, very quickly. Soon after she arrives, Zoe finds herself tagging alongside a kid named Zak, lost in a crazy city, with no money and no way home.

Revisado: 01-21-17
The narration was sometimes choppy during transitions from one sentence to the next, I suspect due to editing. The character voices were fun and youthful.

I really enjoyed this suspenseful, introspective story. the narrator's primary character voice was a little flat for me, but it somewhat fits the calm nature of the protagonist. I got past it.

The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

I, personally may not have been able to read this as a physical book, but read as an audio book, it was very good. I learned a lot about depth of character, rowing, perseverance, and some interesting g perspective on Hitler's Germany.
