Historia
Following the success of Jarhead, Anthony Swofford assumed he had exorcised his military demons - but as every veteran knows, that isn't exactly how it works. In these searing, courageous pages, Swofford struggles to make sense of what his military service meant, and to decide - after nearly ending it - what his life can and should become. Consumed by drugs, booze, fast cars, and the wrong women, Swofford almost lost everything and everyone that mattered to him.

Intimate and Dark
Revisado: 06-24-17
I enjoyed the book immensely and, as a 32 year old veteran and having a father that passed away recently, I found many parallels. I like how Anthony exposes his own flaws and shows how events in his life changed him as a man. I recommend this book to anyone and especially veterans that face similar struggles in life daily.

One of Heinlein's best-loved works, The Rolling Stones follows the rollicking adventures of the Stone family as they tour the solar system. It doesn't seem likely for twins to have the same middle name. Even so, it's clear that Castor and Pollux Stone both have "Trouble" written in that spot on their birth certificates. Of course, anyone who's met their grandmother Hazel would know they came by it honestly.

Historia
In the year 2030 the Maunder Minimum, a period of solar inactivity, will cause a mini-ice age like it did between the years 1645 and 1710. When it does, Bishop will have to save her not only from the effects of severe weather but also from man himself. Maeve Tildon and her son Ben live alone in the rural town of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Since her husband died in the war, she's barely kept her head above water, and when the first freeze strikes in the fall, she's completely unprepared for what lies ahead.

Great story!
Revisado: 11-15-16
I was really impressed with this book. I thought the author did a great job conveying the anarchy that would take over shortly after an environmental crisis. It does seem like a plausible phenomenon but I felt that it was a little weird that everyone knew what was happening right away. In reality, I'd expect it to take a little longer to sink in. I really liked the characters. Maybe it's just the 'girl' in me but I would have liked a more descriptive transition from friendship to romance. I think there is a big chunk of the story missing there.
I was disappointed that the book was ending because I felt that there was a lot more story to cover. I was happy to learn there is a sequel but think they should have been combined into one book. This could actually be quite a long series, especially if the author decided to share stories from other areas as well. I am very interested to see where it goes and will be watching this author.

Written for an ALMOST adult audience.
Revisado: 11-15-16
This book was pretty good. I liked the mystery element but sometimes felt that it was a little too slow in getting to the point. As another reviewer mentioned, the romance aspect was extraneous and didn't add much to the story except that it made you feel better about the ending. This book seems to be written for a borderline YA genre but does contain strong language and violent references as well as adult content. Nothing too crazy if you read a lot of mainstream books but worth mentioning if you're gonna hand it to a middle schooler. Overall, I like the author's style and anticipate the maturation of his writing.

Unbinding the Soul provides a simple model of healing, drawn from Jungian Psychology, Tibetan Buddhism, and neuroscience. Using the author's story of profound loss, it shows how wisdom and compassion can transform crisis into an opportunity for deep personal development, self-awakening and a celebration of the human spirit.

More a memior with some self-help thrown in
Revisado: 11-10-16
Before I say anything else I want to mention that I am an atheist and hold a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.
As an atheist, there was a lot of magic and mystery that was quite over the top. To be very honest, there were parts of this book that made me giggle (at parts not meant to be funny) or kind of grossed me out. For some context, I was once talking to a lady who legit told me that god told her to call in sick and go shopping. While she was there she saw someone she hadn't seen for a while. She explained that god just really wanted her to say hi to that person. I thought she was joking but she was dead serious. I felt squeamish. Many parts of this book made me feel that exact same way. While this book doesn't focus directly on 'god' there is a lot of spirituality involved so prepare yourself.
As a psychology major, I find value and merit in self-help. I love that this book promoted self-awareness, personal boundaries, and compassion for others but especially for oneself. These are very valuable attributes to anyone looking to grow. I loved that the author shared personal stories and helped the reader see destructive behaviors from another perspective. It's therapeutic to see bigger pictures and approach people with understanding and empathy. I think learning these lessons is very necessary to reprocess the training and indoctrination we receive as children. They help us uncover and form ourselves instead of just being a product of our environment. On those principals, this book could be very helpful for some. The author did a fabulous job describing thought processes and behaviors. The author was very articulate. I find that to be a wonderful attribute and can tell she did a lot of personal work to be able to describe her feelings and their repercussions as well as she did. This book tells the experience of the author. Realize that your path will be different.
Overall, I think this book could be very useful for some people but it's certainly not for everyone.

In a Mirror City is a chilling, dystopian sci-fi noir about a girl called Maja Larsen, who is trapped in a world that was broken long before she was born. Maja is caught up in this fast-paced conspiracy, aided and abetted by a ragged guard of criminals and thieves and hounded by authorities that seem to know more about Maja than she does herself.

Interesting concepts and likable heroine
Revisado: 11-09-16
This book was pretty good. Its set in the future and a lot of the concepts seem realistic and totally plausable. The author did a good job describing the desacrated earth and I especially liked how he descibed the environmental impact of our current apathy and the unfornate and inevitable consequenses and how they impacted society. The techonology seemed very believable as well. The heroine seemed quite capable and I'd love to read a prequel describing her story and how she came to be. I could definitely see this as a series and maybe even as a movie. The narrator did a great job as well.

Wow! I really enjoyed this book. It was actually scary! I'm so glad I won't be camping in the next few months so I have time to forget a little bit before I go out into the woods again. The narration was awesome as well! Bravo!
