Historia
A few years ago, David Alvarez had it all: a six-figure book deal, a loving boyfriend, and an exciting writing career. His debut novel was a resounding success, which made the publication of his second book—a total flop—all the more devastating. Now, David is single, lonely, and desperately trying to come up with the next great idea for his third manuscript, one that will redeem him in the eyes of readers, reviewers, the entire publishing world…and maybe even his ex-boyfriend.

Meh
Revisado: 02-04-25
It was ok. It wasn’t really a mystery. It wasn’t a thriller. It was somewhat of a dark comedy but I wouldn’t really call it that either. I kept waiting for it to pick up but it didn’t. Overall it felt flat to me.

Simply amazing
Revisado: 10-09-24
I read (listen) to a lot of books in all
different genres. I just finished this one and my heart is pounding and I’m close to tears—in the best way. It is absolutely unique but it affected me in similar ways as “All the Ugly and Wonderful Things” and “Demon Copperhead.”
I will say there were a few times in the first half where I felt like I may not love it and maybe it was going to be long winded—but I was wrong. If you start to feel this way, please just keep going.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

How is this getting good reviews??
Revisado: 09-19-24
This book is awful. I gave it several hours and won’t finish. The story is nothing special. The dialogue between the characters is just bad. It bounces around with minimal character development. It was free with my subscription and not worth my time.

Incredibly sensitive subject matter! Beware!
Revisado: 09-09-24
I felt like this book was not a mystery or a thriller and instead was a drama detailing the generational aftermath of violent and prolonged child sexual abuse. I felt like there was a lot of awfulness for awfulness sake. And then the author threw in some modern day racism just to round out the terrible characters. It was not an enjoyable read.

Historia
It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid.

Overly wistful and wrought

The narration of the main character made this drag. The story was not engaging or exciting.

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Nice change of pace from what I typically read. Sci-Fi, but not in your face. I loved the main character and rooted for him the whole way. The book kept me guessing and it flew by.

AWFUL!
Revisado: 08-10-23
This was like a freshman high schooler writing a book. It was all filler. Repetitive. Bored me to tears. I only kept listening because I was on the road and hoped it would keep me awake (spoiler: it didn’t and I slept in a parking lot). There is about an hour of actual story/plot in the whole thing. I’ve never read Danielle Steele before and can’t imagine braving anymore.
