Historia
Many Christian women are torn between how the church has taught traditional gender roles and the liberty they see secular society afford to women. But what if the church's conventional teachings on the place of women aren't really biblical at all? On Purpose is a serious study on the verses in the Bible that have often been interpreted to define the role of women in the church, at home, and in the workplace. Julie Coleman reveals how the timeless principles in the Bible actually teach freedom for women. In fact, when rightly understood, these verses are a wake-up call.

Great Salvation Message for Women AND Men
Revisado: 05-11-22
Like the author of this book, I was raised in the Christian church and was always told that women should NOT give sermons. Yet 99% of the people who taught me, whether in Sunday school or public school were women. Why would God prohibit women from leadership roles in the church? Why would He give them gifts He didn’t want them to use?
Julie Zine Coleman answers these and other questions about women’s roles in the church in this wonderfully written and imminently readable book. Her thesis is simple: patriarchy was a CONSEQUENCE of original sin, not the way God intended the social order to be. God never wanted men to LORD OVER their wives; it was merely the CONSEQUENCE of willfully entering the world of sin. Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, humanity has been unshackled from the consequences of original sin and now men and women are free to be what God intended them to be: equal partners.
Zine Coleman’s book will prove controversial for many in the church, who still hold to older, supposedly biblical mores about how to treat women. But when Christianity was born, it had a fire, a passion to break with old laws and bring back our original relationship with God, before the fall. As Paul said to the Galatians: “I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down. For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.” Like Paul before her, Julie Zine Coleman encourages women and men of faith to embrace a new covenant, and TOGETHER to seek HIS will.

Historia
In this lively and compelling biography, Harlow Giles Unger reveals the dominant political figure of a generation. A fierce fighter in four critical Revolutionary War battles and a courageous survivor of Valley Forge and a near-fatal wound at the Battle of Trenton, James Monroe (1751 - 1831) went on to become America's first full-time politician, dedicating his life to securing America's national and international durability.

Hagiography but still informative
Revisado: 03-26-20
Like most founder bios, the person in question is ultimately good and the bad stuff warrants a “regretful mention” serving as a “blemish on an otherwise fantastic career.” James Monroe is presented as an overall force for good here and in fairly engaging detail. I would suggest reading up more on his gambling, his treatment of African Americans, and the net effect of his “parade around the country” style of leadership and how it left the country an empty shell and a parody of the principles it fought for in its revolution.

Historia
Despite his promising start as a young man, by his early 50s Chester A. Arthur was known as the crooked crony of New York machine boss Roscoe Conkling. For years Arthur had been perceived as unfit to govern, not only by critics and the vast majority of his fellow citizens but by his own conscience. As President James A. Garfield struggled for his life, Arthur knew better than his detractors that he failed to meet the high standard a president must uphold. And yet, from the moment President Arthur took office, he proved to be not just honest but brave.

Untold tales of history
Revisado: 11-16-18
Unfortunately, Chester Arthur had all of his personal and official papers burned before his death in 1886 so there isn’t a lot of material to work with when writing about him. The author instead attempts to paint a vivid picture of the times and how they defined Arthur’s life. The book contains many stories I hadn’t heard before, like the heroic actions of William Herndon, Arthur’s father-in-law, on the sinking ship “The South American.” The account of Garfield’s rise and assassination and the story of Charles Guiteau is told with great detail here as well, with an eye towards its effect of Arthur’s accidental presidency. Although this book lacks the epic detail of a Grant or Hamilton bio, it provides a way to get to know our little talked about 21st commander in Chief as well as the ins and outs of machine party politics in the 1870s and 80s that characterized his political career. This fairly quick read will make you an instant Arthur expert!

Historia
When James K. Polk was elected president in 1844, the United States was locked in a bitter diplomatic struggle with Britain over the rich lands of the Oregon Territory, which included what is now Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Texas, not yet part of the Union, was threatened by a more powerful Mexico. And the territories north and west of Texas---what would become California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and part of Colorado---belonged to Mexico.
