If you could sum up The Duchess Deal in three words, what would they be?

Marriage. Of. Convenience.

What other book might you compare The Duchess Deal to and why?

This book is similar in concept to Lisa Kleypas's "Devil in Winter." In both books, two people get married to further their separate goals, but wind up falling in love.

Which character – as performed by Mary Jane Wells – was your favorite?

I adored Mary Jane Wells's portrayal of Ashbury, the hero. She makes him sound pompous, almost stuffy, which is not the typical voice for a love interest. But Wells makes it work, turning Ashbury into a hilarious, distinct, and lovable character.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Come at once if convenient. If inconvenient, come all the same.

Any additional comments?

Mary Jane Wells knocked it out of the park with this performance. Tessa Dare exceeded expectations. This book should be a part of any Historical Romance library.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I actually did recommend this book to my best friend. When you love something this much, you want to share it.

What did you like best about this story?

The whip-smart and indomitable heroine, Jess.

What does Kate Reading bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Every moment of humor is made even more hilarious by Kate Reading's delivery. She also packs tons of emotion and intelligence into her performance.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did laugh out loud, many times. This book is funnier than a rubber crutch.

Any additional comments?

What are you waiting for? If you love period romances, you have no excuse for passing over Lord of Scoundrels.

Would you listen to Pretty Face again? Why?

I'd listen to this book again, because the performance was so, so good. I'd want to soak it all in once more.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The way the heroine, Lily, was so prejudiced against because of her sexy voice and beautiful appearance was fascinating. You'd think that would only help one in an acting career, but it hurt her aspirations to act on the stage. The least interesting bits were the sex scenes, unfortunately.

What does Morag Sims bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Morag Sims perfectly captured Lily's voice — high, breathy, sexy... and intelligent. It was masterful. It was wonderful to hear her words out loud, since voice is such an important part of the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No part "moved" me in the truest sense of the word, but I loved the moments where people realized how wrong they'd been to judge Lily before getting to know her.

Any additional comments?

I truly wish the author had included more information about the play at the center of the story. I also wish Lily's first public stage performance, with all of the emotion behind it, had been more detailed.

Awkward Writing, Awkward Narration

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Die hard Richelle Mead fans.

What do you think your next listen will be?

A romance novel.

How could the performance have been better?

If the narrator could keep her accents consistent and better performed. The protagonist has an accent in the book, and the narrator made her sound like five different nationalities within five minutes. It was, frankly, horrible.

What character would you cut from Midnight Jewel?

Tom the Pirate. What a weird side-plot, and her dealings with Tom made me dislike Mira, the protagonist, quite a bit.

Any additional comments?

The book was a disappointment, and the narrator did it absolutely no favors. I regret buying this audiobook.
