Not my usual genre, but well worth the read. Three beautiful and sad “coming of age” tales where three generations of women find the inner strength to stand against their abusers.

…because the cast did such a fabulous job of making me feel icky. I normally don’t go for full cast productions because it can be very hard for me to follow voices when there are sound effects at the same time, but this book never overlapped the two. Voices were clear and stood out even more because of the absence of other sounds. Great job overall of conveying loss, betrayal, meaninglessness and the horrors and the folly of man.

I normally read military fiction, sci-fi, or apocalyptic novels, so I’m used to fast paced action. This book was much subtler. The persistent themes of morality and social expectations acted as an ideal backdrop for the main characters, who are all pariahs. Women suffering the patriarchy and chronic illness was so relatable. Wonderful slow burn.

The characters are inconsistent and their decisions make little sense, until you realize it’s a plot device. For example, Queen is a stone cold killer who is so resilient and determined that she doesn’t cry out during torture. But then she loses focus on the battle field because she has a crush on someone. That’s not something a battle-hardened warrior would do. Many more examples occur, but I don’t want to spoil the novel for folks who can overlook those things.

I read a lot of these military+weird series, and the Joe Ledger series continues to be the best written and most captivating of them all.

This series feels more like incremental releases of the same bigger novel. The timeline is condensed and the characters don’t go through jumps in development between books, but it’s still quite enjoyable! My only complaint was Ray Porter forgetting for several chapters that he reads Ricky with a Hispanic accent. Ricky was just randomly a white dude from Ohio. 😂

I love Zachary Quinto, but he was wrong for this book. The danger of using well-known actors is that their past work colors the story, and in this case, I felt like I was listening to Syler. The writing suffers from “truth being able to be stranger than fiction.” We know that powerful men in Hollywood get away with egregious things—Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey—but those are backed by facts. The same premise doesn’t work as well as fiction. We want the world to be just. We want the closure of the Good Guy saving the day, or the Bad Guy redeeming himself. We only see that with one character, who breaks down and does the right thing. Instead, this story ends more like, “it was only a matter of time,” which isn’t satisfying.

Consumed all of Boyfriend Material (which is far from my usual genre, but I loved it), and then did the same with Husband Material, the last 45 minutes of which felt as abruptly disappointing as Season 8 of Game of Thrones. Oliver and Luc’s character development was steady and the author did a good job demonstrating how worldviews are slow to change. But the resolution of the relationship (trying to avoid spoilers) should’ve ended with a massive laugh of relief and a friend party or not ended until like 6 month later.

Not my usual genre, but the sample made me laugh at the metaphors the author used, so I took a chance. Glad that I did. Lovely and vulnerable and sweet. Would definitely recommend for anyone who wants to get hit right in the feels

The book starts by plopping you into the middle of the main character’s experience in a way that makes you feel like you tuned in 10 minutes late to a show on TV. The story is definitely more world-building than character development focused. The world seems really interesting, but the book ends with a ton of loose ends. Also, this audio was copied from CD and there are some errors in editing (like the narrator repeating lines on occasion or the audio that says “disc 3.”)
