sometimes I get tired of heroic and agonizingly “good” main characters. So when a character as complex as Johannes comes along it’s always a delight.

Compelling protagonist

These days people tend to try so hard to make a protagonist who is likable and selfless despite tons of trauma. El feels like a teenage girl who has experienced what she experienced. And she’s complex, and grows. I loved to see it. The ending cliffhanger almost killed me though, on to the next book!

Amazing!

I loved this continuation. Although I could due without the tons of recap (I don’t think the book would be that understandable as a stand alone regardless) but I still enjoyed the story and was so happy to see my favorite characters again. My only grievance is that one of the narrators (Tes) reads MUCH too fast. I found myself having to the slow down the speed at her parts.

Terrible choice of narrator

Interesting story but narration was so bad I couldn’t finish the book. The story is set in Italy with primarily Italian characters but the actor who performs the book sound like a California teenager throughout. At least he attempts a German accent for the General. Surely they could have found a more appropriate authentic sounding voice actor to perform this otherwise decent book?

Disappointing

The African setting is what intrigued me about this book. However I found the story and characters predictable and the writing not especially good. Reads like a young adult fantasy. creative in parts but not recommended if looking for good literature about African women. Try Ancestor Stones instead.

Entertaining and insightful

I don't always like memoirs but this one was fantastic. Noah is a great storyteller and his insights about race, language, gender in South Africa were spot on. Made me laugh and cry. I will never forget some of the images from this book. Highly highly recommended!

if you love action packed fantasy this is the book for you! i love the narrator and how she does each and every character different. Vega is awesome and so much fun. you can even read this book without reading the first one!

Should have stopped with Simon Vance

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Great story.

How could the performance have been better?

Simon Vance is an excellent narrator and credibly portrays all the characters. Why then does this recording periodically insert other actors - and bad ones at that -- to narrate the same parts. To me this was confusing, distracting and annoying.
