An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. great book/bad narrator
Revisado: 03-16-22
The story really does deserve all the accolades it has received. They just had a REALLY bad narrator. I felt like I was listening to some old, grizzled detective working a case in the United States during the roaring 20's.

Everything went right
Revisado: 12-31-21
I can't say enough good stuff about this entire series. Lovable, EXTREMELY human (not ALWAYS human) characters. Complete with risen heroes from the last minute to Angels that fell at the last second. The reader was also incredible. His vocal range and ability to express male or female voices was fantastic. Someti.es narrators will go to far trying to emphasize male or female voices and it's very noticeable.

Historia
Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

This book really shined a light on a subject I am very naive on. Much better, broad understanding of Native American life styles, communities and kingdoms before the arrival of Europeans.

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Slow burn but worth it.
Revisado: 05-10-21
It took a little time for the story to get some real wheels under but when it did, it was a vehicle careening out of control. Book one has me hooked. Narrator was fantastic. I was concerned at first when he started out because I thought he would be monotone but his voice proved to be remarkably flexible.

One of my top three favorite books.
Revisado: 03-24-21
This is one of my absolute favorite books. I absolutely adore the main character but the author also builds a tantalizing universe which is among my favorite types. Scifi universe builders are about as deep and epic as they get. The author wrote three books but could have written a dozen based on the universe he constructed. I went into this already knowing I love the story so my only concern was the narrator. WOW, did the narrator do an amazing job. I've only listened to a couple dozen books and experienced maybe 14 or 15 narrators so maybe this isn't saying much but the narrator was the best I've heard so far. He had a wonderfully flexible voice able to give a wide range of sounds that were very convincing. This was by far my best experience with audible and I have had many great reads here.

It's the year 2277. For 50 years, Earth has received mysterious data transmissions from random locations in deep space. The streams include advanced technology, allowing humans to achieve faster-than-light travel virtually overnight. As we prepare to take our first tentative steps into interstellar space, we know almost nothing about our alien benefactors, and their motivations remain unexplained.

Narrator destroys this audio book!!!
Revisado: 03-11-21
I really liked the story line but it was impossible to get through. The narrator is the worst I've heard on Audible. The guy doesn't seem to have any idea what inflection and tone is. He was completely monotone. I felt like I was listening to Ikea furniture instructions. I confess that I haven't listened to a LOT of audio books..13 or 14 or so, but I sure hope he is the low point of my experience. The book was free and I stopped it early on so no harm, no foul.

Great story, great narrator
Revisado: 01-17-21
I love epic sci-fi and fantasy. The grander and more broad the arcs the more I tend to like them so I really enjoyed this story and will purchase the next book soon, I hope.
Being jobless sucks. Yay pandemic!!!
The author told a great story. My preference in scifi writers is to have a strong understanding of science. When the author describes a planet inside the same one as Aru, you find out it has been shattered into 3 pieces..by commit. For something to have the force to do that it would take at least a dwarf planet and for it to break into 3 pieces is odd. Each individual piece would shoot off in different directions or if it didn't, would come back together pretty quickly. This was described by two children so maybe the info will be corrected later. In the story, Mars is going to be destroyed by the Sun going Supernova. Fortunately the author DOES understand that our Sun can't go supernova and so is able to explain how it does. Don't want to go into how the author does that because it would spoil and element of the story.
Kevin Emerson writes a fantastic story that I enjoyed so much that his description of a planet shattered into 3 pieces was something I was able to overlook. Besides, that was the most glaring issue I found so that's not to bad.

WH40k and Haley are a love story
Revisado: 11-29-20
Guy Haley and War Hammer belong together. Haley really gives it a great take on what this universe could sound like as well as giving a lot of depth and breath to a large range of different characters.
The story is wonderfully and creatively dark. I love the imagination that goes into it. It's pretty much Clive Barker levels of twisted ideas. This PARTICULAR book is pretty moderate in the 40K universe.

Historia
Boarding a transport ship after the Battle of Gettysburg, Colonel Andrew Keane and his 35th Maine regiment are swept into an alternate world. The first human civilization they encounter on this planet resembles medieval Russia, with boyars and priests ruling over the peasants and townspeople. Soon Keane and his regiment learn this world's terrible secret: that cannibalistic hordes of large, fierce Tugars circle the planet and demand tribute - including humans to be devoured.

Great story, Bad narrator
Revisado: 08-09-20
I have every intention of buying the rest of the books gradually despite my preference for a different narrator. The guy just didn't have the weight and gravitas for this book. The main protagonists are 8 ft tall, eat human beings and look like devil's as the book itself describes them. It really needed to be a deep base voice like a baritone. It's not the narrators fault. Someone else should have been selected.
