Naomi Novak is a master at dialogue, and this story is an example of her skills.

The narration by Lisa Flanagan is nuanced, and her portrayal of Chernobog is exquisite. I did have some trouble discerning the voices of Irina and Miriam, when the chapter didn't specifythe turnover.

I am a fantasy fan, and apparently, Justine gets me. When I read "One Apart", I thought it was a bit long and not all of it appealed to my senses. This short story, however, hit all the right buttons and made me wish for more. The two boys, Lunem and Lux, are brothers who share a link not only in name (both refer to light), but their family bond is strong, and their parents give them love and praise enough to share. This was a delightful story, and I would love to see it animated, perhaps by the artists who did The Little Prince...

Having read a couple of Justine Avery's pieces, I was expecting a fluffy, cerebral story but this was gritty and different. The family depicted here had a macabre sense of humor, with a twist of irony. Adult language was peppered throughout, some of it justified by the circumstances. The ending took me by surprise, and I liked it.

Ransom Riggs has made being a nerd cool again. Old time photos that would have been left in dime stores and thrift baskets are fueling the imagination of a new generation. I wish the narrator didn't raise his inflection at the end of every sentence, but his accents are so good that I can forgive that.

An honest look at the business of death

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-25-19

Even after living past half a century, there are things about death and dying that are secrets to me. The methods modern society uses to hide the fact that we all die, and not always in a pretty way, are more barbaric than simply laying a body out in the forest to return to the dust. I have always thought that cremation would be my choice. It still is. If I take a side trip and become a science or medical cadaver, then that's cool, too.

Kat writes with humor and pathos and reads her words with inflection and accent so that you understand immediately what her intention is. I will read more of her work.

Norse Mythology may be a new obsession

Rob Shapiro is a great narrator. Very conversational. Good voice characters. And Amy Harmon is becoming one of my favorite authors. This is the second audiobook written by her that I've listened to. She is the best at describing heartfelt conversation and unrequited love.

The most satisfactory ending

This narrator is so precise with her pronunciation and enunciation, it's almost irritating. But, I've become accustomed to her voice and mannerisms, after listening to several Robert Dugoni novels.

Detective Jude Fontaine has had a rough life, losing her mother at a young age to murder, being harassed by her family, kidnapped and tortured for three years as a result of her association to her family. After all the crap Jude has lived through, it is surprising to her how much she feels for a four-year-old boy dropped at her doorstep in a snowstorm.

No hints here, you'll have to read or listen to all three books in this series to find out the ultimate twist. Just know you'll have to slog through some darkness and muck to get there.

One of those stories you wish you could put down, but can't, because the suspense reaches out and grabs you, making it hard to sleep until you finish another chapter.

Great Narration, Good Story

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-23-18

Lately I've been on a kick of reading WW2 stories, fiction and nonfiction. Most of the stories have been based in Europe or the UK, with all the attending horror of that period. This novel, however, is about a Jewish family who escapes Germany and is brought to America by the Quakers, who rescued as many Jews as they could.

The story is about the German family, but also about the American girl who comes to work for them as a companion/au pair/secretary. It is also about a young man who is a benefactor to the family, and their five-star relationship with him.

Sometimes the story veers a bit heavily into the philosophy that is part of the German father's study. But mostly, it is about the interaction in the family with this benefactor and the secretary who keep the family afloat and sane.

Subject was intriguing, narration was not

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-24-18

I thoroughly enjoy Charlie Holmberg's writing, even as I know it is aimed at young adults, I enjoy the innocent themes of attraction and intrigue. The narration of this book was distracting,as the reader ended each phrase in a questioning manner. Her voice is a bit nasal, and her phrasing could use polishing.

She has potential, so I am going to give her points for accents and will listen to any other work that might give me better insight.
