The setting
Revisado: 01-25-25
Honestly I found this tiresome - I had little to no empathy for Grady and his priorities and ridiculous decisions. Did he seriously not see what was ahead? I thought it was fairly obvious. My favorite character was the dog - the only one who was decent throughout.

Historia
One bitterly cold February night at the remote MacKinnon Hotel, Remie Yorke begins her last shift at the front desk as the snow begins to fall. She has booked a one-way flight for the next day—and she's never coming back to Scotland. Or so she thinks. As the storm quickly invades the surrounding Highlands, the roads become impassable and the phone lines fall dead. When the icy temperatures plummet further, an injured man stumbles into the hotel lobby from the blizzard. Police Constable Don Gaines has been in a car accident on the mountain road, and Remie welcomes him to safety.

The setting and the suspense of not knowing who to trust.
Revisado: 01-24-24
Excellent performance, engaging plot, eerie setting. I found it difficult at times to empathize with the main character’s chief motivation, but that was minor and didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment.

Enchanting and beautiful
Revisado: 12-20-23
One of the best books I’ve experienced in recent years. My #1 for 2023 - multiple performers perfectly suited to the nuances of each section, making each exquisite story resonate within the tapestry of the narrative. Just beautiful.

Fascinating story, beautifully presented
Revisado: 10-05-23
This story and presentation are just perfect. I love how it unfolded between mother and daughters, and I felt like I was at the summer stock rehearsals and right there in the cherry orchard. Meryl Streep was a real treat - I had high expectations and she did not disappoint.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Revisado: 05-31-16
Outstanding novel perfectly performed. Learned so much about the ship and the impact of the sinking on world events. Loved the various threads, including the account of President Wilson. The actual attack was very well done from the perspectives of those aboard the ship as well as those aboard U-20.

Historia
They were the Princess Dianas of their day—perhaps the most photographed and talked about young royals of the early twentieth century. The four captivating Russian Grand Duchesses—Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia Romanov—were much admired for their happy dispositions, their looks, the clothes they wore and their privileged lifestyle. Over the years, the story of the four Romanov sisters and their tragic end in a basement at Ekaterinburg in 1918 has clouded our view of them, leading to a mass of sentimental and idealized hagiography.

Enthralling, I couldn't stop listening.
Revisado: 01-27-15
The Russian Revolution was a part of world history I was not overly knowledgeable about, and found fascinating from the viewpoint of the Imperial Family. Meticulously researched and wonderfully written, and performed with such empathy never crossing over to melodrama. One of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to.
