Historia
Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she’s actually read. To replace the “pornographic” books she’s challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she’s sure the town’s readers need.

The author's note at the end.

I enjoyed it but I felt towards the end, it started to get "corny" for lack of a better word. Overall, an entertaining read, depending on your politics of course.

Reads like a romance novel
Revisado: 09-23-22
**spoiler alert**
This had all of the makings of a romance novel - naive good girl meets wealthy "I don't believe in relationships" bad boy. Then he can't stop thinking about her, sex scenes, and marriage. All this to say, the writing wasn't great and neither was the story. The only thing I will get behind is that women shouldn't stay in abusive relationships, especially with children.

Historia
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

Not good
Revisado: 08-31-22
Like what others have said, the book is just not good. The main characters complains about the same thing for all fifty something chapters. It's hard to even root for her. The story itself also is not good. It attempts to be a feel-good come back story, but it didn't accomplish that for me. It went from an unrealistically naive "woe is me" woman, who stumbles into a neighborhood where she encounters one stroke of luck after another, while she complains about it.

Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Melodramatic
Revisado: 05-22-22
The book started off light and entertaining, with funny quips and seemingly the anti-romance novel. But then it drags as we keep hearing the main character's martyrdom over and over. The narrative, I feel, attempts to paint her as a selfless misunderstood successful hot shot New Yorker. Instead she comes across as this "woe is me" person with an unhealthy attachment and possessiveness with her sister. That got old really quick. And enough with the long dramatic descriptions about Charlie's eyes already.
Julia W. was great as always however.

Hard to finish
Revisado: 01-28-21
I suppose it's what you'd expect of this genre. While this book was going for that feel good,rom-com delivery, it often landed on cringy bad clichés.
I liked the Vietnamese culture in this book and it's really what I was interested in. But aside from that, it was a hard book to listen too without rolling your eyes.
The narration was pretty good actually. She did the different voices and speech patterns well.

Didn't enjoy it
Revisado: 05-21-20
None of the characters were likeable. Everyone seemed so self absorbed. Much of the dialogue seemed terribly over dramatic. "Ma's" narration and script were cringe worthy. She sounded like a voice changer was used. Sylvie's breathy "woe is me" voice was also very annoying.

Revisado: 05-11-20
None of the characters were likable, except for the toddler Briar. I loved Briar's random ramblings. Other than that, the dialogue was cringe worthy and awkward. I'm not sure what Alix's deal was with Emira. White guilt? Lonely for a friend? Savior complex? Girl crush?
Also, there didn't seem to be any resolved. The characters all just go on to continue to be their disappointing selves.
I thought the narrator did a good job, even though the character depiction was a bit stereotypical

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Great listen
Revisado: 01-13-19
I enjoyed the story and the writing very much. the narration was also good overall. The only character's voice I found a bit annoying was Kya's. This isn't a knock on the narrator though. Perhaps the accent is accurate, and the childishness/ timidness of her speech is to portray Kya's upbringing so it's just my opinion.
