Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

The juice ain’t worth the squeeze
Revisado: 11-06-24
This was very grueling to get through. It finished up fine but getting to the end just felt like a chore. And the reward just isn’t worth the effort. Took me 3Xs as long to get through and one of the shortest books.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Can I love AND hate it?
Revisado: 07-12-24
How uncomfortable is it to be inside someone else’s mind! How eerily similar? The character is all the unlikable traits of myself, that I think I have to hide to be likable. I think the character even said as much. I found this book super relatable and uncomfortable, and all the feels between. I appreciate July for having the guts to write it. Didn’t love the pace of the audio.

Couldn’t put it down!
Revisado: 04-09-24
Somehow I missed this when it came out. Once again I find excuses to listen to Karin’s books! Meaning I am NOT listening to background music nor am I getting any work done for the last few hours of this book! I love Will Trent, but man do I love Andrea! Another series by Karin where the ancillary and familiar relationships and dialogs are enthralling. Keep them coming please!

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Historia
In this “outstanding debut thriller” (Booklist, starred review), Helen’s idyllic life—handsome architect husband, gorgeous Victorian house, and cherished baby on the way—begins to change the day she attends her first prenatal class. There, she meets Rachel, an unpredictable single mother-to-be who doesn’t seem very maternal: she smokes, drinks, and professes little interest in parenthood.

It starts slow, but is definitely worth the finish. Ultimately, what I liked best was hearing the story through the 3 different female narrators.

Historia
For Susan Green, messy emotions don’t fit into the equation of her perfectly ordered life. She has a flat that is ideal for one, a job that suits her passion for logic, and an “interpersonal arrangement” that provides cultural and other more intimate benefits. But suddenly confronted with the loss of her mother and the news that she is about to become a mother herself, Susan’s greatest fear is realized. She is losing control.

A not as funny Bridget Jones.
Revisado: 06-22-20
This was a solid read. Throughout the entire book I kept comparing her to Bridget Jones. But Bridget was funnier and more lovable. I gave it 4 stars because it was an easy listen, even being so predictable. The difference between a 3.5 and a 4 is I found myself disappointed when the story was over. Maybe we’ll get a second book. The cactus and her baby.
Looking forward to seeing how Reese turns it into a movie or limited series. I think it may be a situation. Where the show is better than the book!

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

May be a better book read.
Revisado: 05-08-20
I’m the first to love both Tom Hanks and Ann Patchett. I liked this book the least of all the ones I’ve read of hers. I was so bored during the first 3/4 of the book. I’m not sure if it was the inflection Hanks uses in his words and speech, or the story itself. By the end, it picked up and over all I found it to be okay. I think it’s more of a 3 1/2 star than a 3. I know people who have read it that really enjoyed it and others that felt the same as me, I’m not sure if they read it or listened.
