Historia
Your God is too small. We like God small. We prefer a God who is safe, domesticated, who thinks like we think, likes what we like, and whom we can manage, predict, and control. A small God is convenient. Practical. Manageable. The truth: God is big. Bigger than big. Bigger than all the words we use to say big. Ironically, many today seem turned off by the concept of an awesome, terrifyingly great God. We assume that a God you would need to fear is guilty of some kind of fault. For us, thinking of God as so infinitely greater and wiser than we are and who would cause us to tremble in his presence is a leftover relic.

My new favorite book, besides the Bible
Revisado: 10-10-24
Wow, I'm now recommending this book to my dear friends, many of whom have been praying faithfully to see God's will. Thank you, J.D., for collecting and restating so much Scriptural truth, with relatability and humor. I'm thrilled and humbled to worship our amazing LORD and seek His face.

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn famously said that one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming totalitarianism can't happen in their country. Many American Christians are making that mistake today, sleepwalking through the erosion of our freedoms. Live Not by Lies will wake them and equip them for the long resistance.

Revisado: 03-16-22
I'm not sure why it took me so long to get through the first couple of chapters, but then I could barely put it down. This is a very pertinent book for our time. I plan to also buy the paperback and read it with my husband and teenagers.

Historia
In 2012, Jonathan Cahn caused a worldwide sensation with the release of his first book, The Harbinger. It was hailed as "stunning", "prophetic", "mind-blowing", and "astonishing". Cahn followed it with best seller after best seller, but he has always held off on writing a sequel. But now, for the first time, Cahn opens up what could not be unlocked before - the mysteries that couldn’t be revealed until the present time, the manifestations that have taken place since The Harbinger came out and up to the present hour, and the mysteries of what is yet to come.

Very Interesting
Revisado: 01-02-22
I found this very interesting.
I didn't care for the style of questions and answers, but it was worth struggling through that to get main points.
I had never heard of all the connections between the various people and dates and locations in history with the current events of warning and judgement, but it was fascinating. The author always points to Jesus and the gospel and the sovereignty of God. I was somewhat cynical at first, but didn't find anything I felt disagreed with Scripture. I plan to listen again and would like to read a visual copy next time.
My teens were very interested in what they overheard. We are now planning to study more of the Bible together.

Good. Thorough. Helpful.
Revisado: 11-19-21
Subject was interesting to me, but somehow (narration? writing style? my short attention span?) a bit dry. Despite this, the information overall was very helpful, especially in the practical tips at the end. Well researched. Wish my family and my doctor knew this information!

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

interesting, but not groundbreaking
Revisado: 08-07-17
Well-written memoir read by the author. He's experienced so much, and eloquently tells his family's story. Although I've not experienced Hillbilly life longer than the week I was a camp staffer in KY, I did grow up in rural IL, and also lived and worked in Chicago and suburbs among poor people. Our family is a rare 2-parent stable family in our neighborhood and we are intentional about caring for our neighbors, especially at-risk children.
I deeply appreciate the author's honesty and vulnerability in sharing and celebrate his continued growth and success. I can support his conclusions about the needs of his people and propose these needs are more widespread than his hometown / the geographical area of Appalachia. Thank you, J.D. Vance, for your perspective in this ongoing, important discussion.

Historia
Facing summer with her two boys, ages 10 and seven, Pam Lobley was sifting through signups for swim team, rec camp, night camp, scout camp, and enrichment classes. Overwhelmed at the choices, she asked her sons what they wanted to do during summer: "Soccer? Zoo School? Little Prodigy's Art Club?" "Why can't we just play?" they asked. A summer with no scheduled activities at all. The thought was tempting, but was it possible? It would be like something out of the 1950s.

Love the concept
Revisado: 06-29-17
My children have also complained that they "never have time to play!" so I was intrigued by the title. I found the story humorous and relatable. There were a few times I wanted to encourage her to be "the parent" and say no more often to screen time, or make them read more books. But we as moms do the best we can, and in the end, she had precious memories to savor. Fun read, with helpful insights and tips.
