Historia
Malaya, 1951. Yun Ling Teoh, the scarred lone survivor of a brutal Japanese wartime camp, seeks solace among the jungle-fringed tea plantations of Cameron Highlands. There she discovers Yugiri, the only Japanese garden in Malaya, and its owner and creator, the enigmatic Aritomo, exiled former gardener of the emperor of Japan. Despite her hatred of the Japanese, Yun Ling seeks to engage Aritomo to create a garden in memory of her sister, who died in the camp.

Artfully Present Story
Revisado: 09-23-24
Few words can do honor to such a work. A layered and historical context is deftly interwoven amid the verdure of Malaya. Multiple themes of love, Taoism, art, friendship and loss draw the listener, aided by inspired narration by Anna Bentinck, toward a deeper experience of life.

Historia
Set in the industrialising England of the Napoleonic wars, a period of bad harvests, Luddite riots, and economic unrest, Shirley is the story of two contrasting heroines and the men they love. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory, whose life represents the plight of single women in the 19th century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention.

Would I Could Live in This Book
Revisado: 08-12-24
Hard pressed to name a Charlotte Bronte favorite, it is enough to say that Shirley occupies a small and decorous room in my heart. Its many themes, truths, poignancies and observations…Bronte continues to enrich me even after nearly 60 years of reading her.
Running a close second is the remarkable, quietly stunning narrator, Anna Bentinck. Deeply personal, and masterfully able to evoke place, spirit, epoch — Bentinck’s pitch-perfect performance transforms the listener and communicates verdant soulfulness and meaning.
Indeed I keep replaying segments of Shirley, as I am so reluctant to leave.

A Pure Stream
Revisado: 06-17-23
This rendition of Little Men is such a contrast to today’s media faire! It is a pure stream of positive messages. No matter that it could be said that society has changed and moved on since 1871 —this story is still pointing to a better world and how to get there.
Modern readers may find it preachy - but the messages, to me, are timeless.
The narration is very fitting for this story, as well. Glad that Audible picked up this recording.

Story of Grim Truths
Revisado: 04-09-23
The Ruin was an absorbing listen on Audible. It animated believable characters and brought contemporary Irish culture to life, juxtaposing modernism with details of traditional and outdated cultural references.
I admire stories that create likable
characters. I even found myself wondering if we’d hear of another Detective Cormac Riley mystery…

Historia
Set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this classic gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. The novel revolves around the exploits of the impoverished but beautiful and devious Becky Sharp who craves wealth and a position in society. Calculating and determined to succeed, she charms, deceives and manipulates everyone she meets. A novel of early 19th-century English society, it takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan's 17th-century allegory.

Deeply Immersive
Revisado: 03-10-23
Vanity Fair is an immersive foray into a subset of late 18th/early 19th c. society. With superb narration, the listener is drawn ever deeper into the lives of a loosely-connected troupe of players. Though they are fictional, their historic period and places are not.
Notwithstanding their epoch, the messages (and there are many!) remain fresh today.
Thackeray’s probing narrative is masterful, bringing his characters to life, breath and color, enhanced by his uber-perceptive teachings on human nature in all its beauty and depravity.
My favorite Audible Book to date!

Tensions with the British, and with the Spanish in Florida, just a short way down the coast, are rising, and slaves are starting to become restless. True Historical Fiction
Revisado: 02-02-23
Even though this story is, by the author’s own admission, not 100% historically accurate, it is well-researched. Moreover, it captures the spirit of a determined woman, and the heart that surely must have generated her deeds.
Melodramatic? Yes. A sepia portrait of slavery and plantation life? Certainly. Still, we cannot know what Eliza Lukas was really like. But we might not know of her at all had not Natasha Boyd given Eliza a voice.
I enjoyed this book and was sad when it was finished.

Historia
First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

Unparalleled Work
Revisado: 05-07-22
The genius of Charles Dickens is fully on display in every chapter of this book. His endless insights into the human condition still stand up to the test of time.
Equally superb is the performance of the reader Simon Vance. The listener is absorbed into Dickens’ world and enchanted.

Historia
Published in instalments in 1859, The Woman in White is often considered to be one of the very first detective novels. Although critics weren’t impressed at the time, the novel proved to be a hit with the public and has since gone on to become one of the timeless classics of the Victorian era. Following the adventures of Walter Hartright, this is a story of sleuthing, inheritance, ghosts and mistaken identity and was recently the subject of a hit TV adaptation by the BBC.

Deeply Engaging
Revisado: 12-20-21
“The Woman in White” by Willie Collins struck me first as a voice very similar to the observational style of Jane Austen.
By its end, however, my heart was engaged and I cared about what would happen.
The story is intriguing; the performance by Billy Howle, priceless.
