Political Intrigue, Science and Polo in the Cold War
Revisado: 10-19-24
This is a great start to a series, can’t wait for the next installment. Dawn/Aurora is a fascinating character and the political machinations set amongst the scientific discoveries and culture of the 1930s makes for Neal Stephenson at his best. (I’m just waiting for Enoch Root, a Waterhouse or a Shaftoe to make an appearance)

One moment I'm a heretical priest in the twelfth century, hunted, hated...the next, I'm waking up in the nearest corpse. Stuck in a cycle of instant reincarnation, popping back up like a tarnished penny.

First person gorefest other than that it’s excellent.
Revisado: 08-05-23
Ok, I actually like the plot and the story and the characters and the setting. I like the way the history of the characters gets mixed into the storytelling. In fact I think I may read some of the other books but I won’t listen to them. The author /narrator is good, but the revelry in the gore is way too over the top for me. The gore doesn’t add to the story and the narration of the gore and other general suffering is a little too enthusiastic for my taste.

Historia
As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister, to being outed against his will, to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life—literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo. Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that's been the case so far . . . Now Nico is being plagued by a voice calling out to him from Tartarus, the lowest part of the Underworld.

Desk ex Machina / Gothic romance.
Revisado: 06-19-23
Mostly this book felt like an attempt to put a gothic romance in the Percy Jackson universe. Which would be great if it was done well. However almost every difficulty that the couple face is resolved not so much by their own ingenuity and more by an action from a supernatural entity. The wonderfully accepting nature of everyone toward a couple of queer kids on an adventure was fabulous, I just wish that the author had put more effort into the actual adventure, the characters seem to basically drift through the book without doing much at all.

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

Horror, gore and sex
Revisado: 03-13-19
The performance of the book is great. The gritty detective fiction and weird sci-fi wasn’t bad. The pornography and sex were written ok. Even the violence was at least in context. But I can’t deal with pure horror and in combination with everything else I had to stop listening.

Historia
The Jubilee Tides will drown the continents of the planet Miranda beneath the weight of her own oceans. But as the once-in-two-centuries cataclysm approaches, an even greater catastrophe threatens this dark and dangerous planet of tale-spinners, conjurers, and shapechangers. From author Michael Swanwick—one of the most brilliantly assured and darkly inventive writers of contemporary fiction—comes a masterwork of radically altered realities and world-shattering seductions.

Any additional comments?
This would have been a great read, but it just doesn't work as an audiobook. The narration is perfect for the story but really unlistenable to.
