Historia
In the town of Ada, Oklahoma, Ron Williamson was going to be the next Mickey Mantle. But on his way to the Big Leagues, Ron stumbled, his dreams broken by drinking, drugs, and women. Then, on a winter night in 1982, not far from Ron’s home, a young cocktail waitress named Debra Sue Carter was savagely murdered. The investigation led nowhere. Until, on the flimsiest evidence, it led to Ron Williamson. The washed-up small-town hero was charged, tried, and sentenced to death - in a trial littered with lying witnesses and tainted evidence....

Excellent & disturbing
Revisado: 05-28-21
Grisham knows how to write and keep your interest. The story was disturbing because it was true. The main character was not a good guy, but the police and legal system were so bad it would’ve been laughable if it didn’t affect this man and his family. Glad I listened.

Historia
Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

Disappointing after A Man Called Ove
Revisado: 05-28-21
Very slow character development, redundant redundant redundant! I stopped listening partway through the book. At that point there were no characters that I liked or connected with. I could see how Backman was interweaving each character’s story, but it got frustrating and boring so I stopped listening.

Historia
When Sarah Gray received the devastating news that her unborn son, Thomas, was diagnosed with anencephaly, a terminal condition, she decided she wanted his death - and life - to have meaning. In the weeks before she gave birth to her twin sons in 2010, she arranged to donate Thomas' organs. Due to his low birth weight, they would go to research rather than transplant. As transplant donors have the opportunity to meet recipients, Sarah wanted to know how Thomas' donation would be used.

This book will change lives
Revisado: 05-30-20
This book is incredible. What a difference this family is making. It’s hard to hear about Thomas’ death, but then you realized he’s not dead - he’s giving life to many others. I would want to do the same as Sarah, go see places & meet people involved in Thomas’ donations. My whole family has been registered organ donors for years, but this book opened my eyes to the fact that I need to pursue making my wishes know about donation for research. We live in a small city where that might not be pursued if my surviving family doesn’t request it. Thank you, thank you Sarah! God bless your family.

Historia
Life often looks so very different than we hoped or expected. Some events may simply catch us off guard for a season, but others shatter us completely. We feel disappointed and disillusioned at best and overwhelmed and hopeless at worst. We quietly start to wonder about the reality of God’s goodness and why he allows us to suffer and experience grief and loss. Lysa TerKeurst understands this deeply. But after many tears, godly counseling, and prayerful seeking, she's also discovered that our disappointments can be the divine appointments our souls need to radically encounter God.

Disappointed
Revisado: 04-08-20
Thought this would be an encouraging book, but it was way too redundant - kept saying basically "we all get disappointed because things don't turn out like we wanted." Well yes, that's why I bought this audiobook. But it was said over & over, rather than getting to the helpful things. The narration was also not what I like. I prefer straightforward with good inflection, but this sounded like a teacher talking to elementary age students. Don't mean to be mean; just not the book for me.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Wow! What a ride!
Revisado: 03-12-20
This story has lab tech, business fraud, and investigative journalism. If you’re not involved in one of those fields, you might think it would be dry, but I did not find it so! To me it just got better and better as it went along. The last Part of the story involves the detail detail work the author did to break the story in the Wall Street Journal. I kept making excuses to listen to the book until I was finished.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Revisado: 01-12-20
Loved this book. Disturbing to know the extremists are out there, but we all know they are. Tara Westover is amazing in the way she overcame her more or less isolated, survivalist, & abusive upbringing. Anyone who has never been given the opportunity to go to school but goes on to advanced studies in the States & England, & overcomes the prejudices & misogyny & just plain mental illness of her family - she's a better woman than I am. I am in awe & will be looking to learn more about her.

She was born in 1930 in El Paso and grew up on a cattle ranch in Arizona. At a time when women were expected to be homemakers, she set her sights on Stanford University. When she graduated near the top of her law school class in 1952, no firm would even interview her. But Sandra Day O’Connor’s story is that of a woman who repeatedly shattered glass ceilings - doing so with a blend of grace, wisdom, humor, understatement, and cowgirl toughness.

Too pedantic for me
Revisado: 01-12-20
I can't say there's anything wrong with this book, but it's not for me. I stopped listening about 2 hours in. If you really, really love O'Connor, then this may be great, but I was just looking to learn something about her life because I admire her accomplishments. Just too much detail. I should have known since it's 16 hours long. Narration is good.

Historia
Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

Revisado: 05-03-19
I can't give this enough stars. I like Gladwell anyway, & this is his best yet. As usual, it's full of facts & statistics, but it never gets overwhelming because of Gladwell's great presentation in story form, & his excellent reading voice. I've recommended this to several people, & plan to use it in teaching. Thank you, Mr. Gladwell!
