In addition to his library duties and his role as doting grandad, Charlie has enrolled in an early medieval history course offered by young, charismatic professor Carey Warriner. Charlie feels a bit out of place - his fellow classmates are half his age - except for Dixie Bell Compton, another "mature" student. When Charlie hears an angry exchange between her and their professor, his interest in piqued. He's even more intrigued when she shows up at his office asking for a study partner.

I love Charlie. It’s so nice to have an older southern white man be open minded and not continue to perpetuate ignorance and bigotry. Bravo.

Nice cozy-ish mystery
Revisado: 04-08-25
Spoilers ahead. Good characters. Although I was a little disappointed there wasn’t more of a resolution for Brad’s family. Pretty depressing that their “happy” ending was the teenage boy being allowed to attend school less to work more to support his sister and mother. After all nothing like forcing children to grow up even faster after their drunken father has been murdered. I feel like it would have been more appropriate for this genre to have had the insurance money come through for them so that the boy could go to college wherever he wanted. As it was, it served as an unwanted dose of reality in an otherwise enjoyable book.

Fun series
Revisado: 12-06-24
So far I love the series, I’m about halfway through. I CANNOT STAND the voice she uses for Luce… it makes me picture her as Lenny from that depressing Steinbeck book. Other than that, everything else is fine.

Hustling her fiance off to a neighboring tourist town might be the only way Jill Gardner can plan her nuptials to South Cove's in-demand police detective. But when a mystery man turns up dead at South Cove's PD, Greg is hightailing it back home to investigate, leaving Jill to finish the vacation solo. Jill can barely get in a spa day before her own respite is spoiled by a greedy hotel guest and unexpected revelations about Max Winter, the developer conniving to buy her home out from under her.

Inconsistencies, but still enjoyable
Revisado: 10-11-24
There are several story inconsistencies such as Aunt Jackie’s owning a successful coffee shop when Jill reaches out in book one to then her backstory changed to working as a waitress in a cafe and raising Jill all by herself. There are several others, really too many to list, but over all it is forgiven because the stories are enjoyable and the characters likable (Aunt Jackie being my least favorite, but still, you can tell she loves Jill)

Pass
Revisado: 09-13-24
Spoiler warning I guess? The book is a snore fest though so I don’t know if spoilers apply. I think the part that made me rate the story a 2 was the blackmailing for the DUMBEST stuff. WHO would pay someone to not tell people that they KISSED an engaged man. Who freaking CARES!?! No one is going “A KISS WITH AN ENGAGED MAN?! BURN HER!” Is this set in the 1700? Is it set in biblical times? No. Actually the more I think about it the more upset it makes me. Two thumbs down. I’m taking another star away from the story because honestly the fact that the author thinks it’s realistic that a grown single woman should be so ashamed about kissing an engaged man that she would pay a blackmailer to keep people from hearing about it is insane.

The inconsistencies kill me
Revisado: 06-16-24
Nothing like feeling like you’re being gaslit because details change as if the author forgot what they wrote previously. WHO edits these?? How were all those inconsistencies missed?! I could give examples from all throughout the series… first she got her first car in Normal from the church then she got it from Joel’s garage. Then she had 3 siblings in one book then suddenly she only had 2. And in that book Mae and the girls meet Barbara in the church (who is Bobby Ray’s ex’s daughter) and I’m pretty sure she was a teen, then in the very next book Mae acts as if she never met Barbara and now she’s 11?? Overall the books are entertaining and Johanna always does a wonderful job. The inconsistency is insulting though.

The accents are bad
Revisado: 05-21-24
I don’t know why she changed the accent for Adrian to Russian. It was definitely not French. And the changed voice for Lacey was nauseating. The performance was better in the 3rd book. Other than that the book is good.

Such a let down, don’t waste your time!
Revisado: 08-21-19
Ellery Adams ruined her whole series with this book. Johanna Parker is a horrible narrator. She over acts every single sentence. It’s sickening. If you liked the other books in this series, don’t bother with this one. You’re better off stopping at the third book. I accidentally skipped the 4th one but I won’t waste my time. I suggest doing yourself a favor and checking out the physical copies from your library because Johanna Parker narrates all the books in this series. She tries way too hard to convey emotion with every single syllable. Her accents are inconsistent, IF she even attempts them. Honestly, we’d all be better off if she hadn’t don’t any accents at all. My ears are still bleeding. 0 stars would not recommend.
