Likable characters, excellent narration

Some have criticized the narration, but that is the first thing I wanted to say I liked about it. This book is a light romance with excellent character development. By the time I got to the last several chapters, I couldn't turn it off, but had to stay up late and finish it.

This isn't abridged, it's butchered!!

This is NOT the classic book, "Little Women"! The omission of Jo and Beth at the seashore might generously be excused as "abridgement", but this omits half the book! There is no mention of Meg and John's marriage and subsequent children. No story of Jo rejecting Laurie's proposal, of Jo's disappointment when Amy gets to accompany Aunt March to Europe. No story of Laurie going to Europe to learn the business, there comforting Amy at Beth's death, and ultimately falling in love with her. There is no mention of Jo going to New York to care for the children of Marmee's friend, nor of Jo meeting and falling in love with Professor Baer. No discussion of learning to write truth from the heart as Jo finally did in, "My Beth". One needs to know most of this to understand the sequels, "Little Men" and, "Jo's Boys". I feel like I have been highjacked!"

A multi-generational FAVORITE. Will listen again.

I often set the timer and listened at bedtime, but fell asleep and missed part of the story. So after waking our 15 year old GGson for school in the morning, I would back it up and replay the missed section. I soon discovered he was listening, too, and enjoying it. How many books appeal to ages 15 and 80?!!
This is a humorous, life-affirming story of a curmudgeon who sees the world in black and white, while grieving his wife who was the color in it. There was nothing before her and nothing after. After being forced out of his job, he has no purpose, so makes several unsuccessful suicide attempts. Young neighbors ask his help and advice, and seeing how inept they are, he just has to help them. Brief, poignant observations about Death in one of the last chapters.
J.K. Simmons should get an award! Nobody could have read it better!

An unbelievable page turner

Good character development. Word picture descriptions. Exciting narration. Improbable plot, but a satisfying end. It was too suspenseful to stop listening.

Enjoyed every minute of it!

Every chapter was interesting, from her childhood in a cramped apartment to her visit to meet Barack's family in Africa to her thoughts upon leaving the White House. That it is read in her familiar voice is a bonus.

Cleverly funny, tender, and they couldn't have found anyone better to perform it. This might be the best of the nearly 100 audible book I have bought to date!

Rather listen than sleep!

If it were a printed book, I would say I couldn't put it down. While the stories entertained, they also educated me as to life under/after apartheid and race relations in general.
