Historia
This is what we long for: the profound pleasure of being swept into vivid new worlds, worlds peopled by characters so intriguing and real that we can't shake them, even long after the story's told. In this extraordinary audiobook, The Last Painting of Sara de Vos, Dominic Smith brilliantly bridges the historical and the contemporary, tracking a collision course between a rare landscape by a female Dutch painter of the Golden Age, an inheritor of the work in 1950s Manhattan, and a celebrated Australian art historian who painted a forgery of it in her youth.

Streuth Bluey, does that Aussie come from Jo'burg?

Interesting story that I have had recommended to me - they read the book, did not listen to it.
I am only half way through it and am enjoying the story very much but there is a huge issue. The Australian characters sound like South Africans who have an Irish mother! This is terrible narration, or at least, a terrible choice of narrator for this story. It's all kind of weird and distracting and every time I hear one of the Australians talk I get bounced out of the story.
Did the (Australian) author have any say in this? I always presumed the authors would be consulted but I just cant see how this might be the case in this instance.

Surprised, but pleasantly
Revisado: 11-11-18
Really good narration made this well penned thoughtful story a joy to listen to, bringing the characters to life and delivering the nuances that were cleverly written. From the early chapters I was engaged on all levels. Great work. Only complaint were the Latin epigraphs - could not understand why they were there. Seemed affected.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

unsurpassed narration of classic
Revisado: 12-18-14
Would you listen to Middlemarch again? Why?
Not sure about listening again to the story except the narration was so exceptional that I just might.
What did you like best about this story?
Great tale full of insight into human character written with humour and intelligence, narrated with exceptional skill - did I mention the narration was excellent.
What about Juliet Stevenson’s performance did you like?
Flow, understanding of the characters, defining the characters. Bringing the cast to life.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The conclusion and the very sad life of the good doctor Tertius - more than paid for his naive pridefulness.
Any additional comments?
The narration and story proves to be a better marriage than most in Middlemarch...
Wonderful.
