A systematic program that helps people take conversations to the next level
Revisado: 03-11-24
Pimsleur programs provide excellent oral language training to develop foreign-language communication skills at a higher level. They have courses in several different languages, many with five levels. Each level has 30 lessons that are 30 minutes long. It’s important to start at the beginning if you are a complete beginner because each lesson builds on vocabulary and sentence structures from previous lessons. The instructors will also ask you questions to make you think about what you’ve learned (e.g., “How would you ask the clerk for directions to Ueno Park?”). Each new vocabulary word is explained slowly and clearly. New vocabulary and sentences are repeated. Instructors also explain cultural information regarding both language usage and cultural practices. I often either stop the audiobook to think about a response, or change the speed to a slower or faster pace, depending on the situation. It’s helpful to incorporate this program with other oral and written courses to develop a more well-rounded understanding of the language.

An exciting book with plot twists that make the reader want to read to the end!
Revisado: 11-21-23
Well-written book with good character development and great narration. Peter James has twists in the plot that are frustratingly tense, making the reader want to know what is going to happen to poor Michael, who is supposed to get married in a few days, but is buried in a coffin at a stag party gone very wrong!

Kyler Shumway presents a several topics and examples about friendship.
Revisado: 05-26-23
Kyler Shumway has done an excellent job of organizing one of the short, 10-lesson, Great Courses programs. This means that instead of providing multiple sessions with specific theoretical factors, he has had to provide succinct, but relevant, information regarding friendship issues. He is a psychologist who has been through his own experiences with bullying, loneliness, introversion, etc. These issues have given him insight into how to help other people deal with various problems in today’s society, particularly with the complications of social media. I listened to this course because I work with many young people who are struggling with their various language, learning and social issues. The concrete information and suggestions that Kyler provides will definitely help a variety of people.

A fascinating voyage of a lock of Beethoven’s hair
Revisado: 05-26-23
It was wonderful to listen to an audible summary of Russell Martin’s extensive research on Beethoven’s life and the voyage of a lock of his hair that was snipped shortly after Beethoven’s death. The audiobook is based on Russell Martin’s book, Beethoven’s Hair, which was a fascinating account of how this lock of hair survived for over a century, and was eventually able to determine the reason for Beethoven’s struggles with health and hearing. After a loved one’s death, it was common practice in Beethoven’s time to take a lock of a hair and put it in a locket, which is what a young admiring music student, Ferdinand Hiller, did shortly after Beethoven’s death. The locket was given to generations of Hiller’s descendants, only to disappear after a descendant was taken out of his Danish hiding place by the Nazis. Hiller’s descendant had given the locket of hair to a Danish man for safekeeping. When the locket with Beethoven’s hair came up for auction due to the current owner’s need for finances, it was amazing that good, caring people bought it. These people were able to analyze some of the hair and fulfill Beethoven’s wish to understand the cause of his physical suffering and increasing deafness. The rest of the hair was sealed back in the locket and was donated to a museum.

Historia
Attorney Justin Glass's practice, housed in a shabby office on the north side of Saint Louis, isn't doing so well that he can afford to work for free. But when eight-year-old Tanisha Walker offers him a jar full of change to find her missing brother, he doesn't have the heart to turn her away. Justin had hoped to find the boy alive and well. But all that was found of Devon Walker was his brutally murdered body - and the bodies of twelve other African American teenagers, all discarded like trash in a mass grave.

Attorney Justin Glass and his story would make the beginning of a good series!
Revisado: 05-24-23
J.D. Stanford is a gifted writer whose writing flows. His story of St. Louis attorney, Justin Glass, is well written, with both good plot and character development. I switched between the kindle book and audiobook. JD Jackson is an excellent narrator who does well at switching between different characters without taking away from the flow of the story. The basic plot involves Justin Glass, a single father who is trying to handle his daughter’s problems, while struggling to develop his small law office in a rundown area in the north of St. Louis. Justin Glass needs to build a clientele to make some money, but he has a hard time turning down a young girl who wants Justin to take on the case of her missing brother. Justin is skeptical about taking on the case, but he can’t help but think about how he would feel if his daughter were missing. As he starts investigating, he finds a pattern involving several boys on probation who are missing, including some who are found murdered. Although Justin is working with a police detective on the case, there doesn’t appear to be much evidence regarding the missing boys. Justin is concerned when it becomes apparent that someone in the legal system might be involved in the boys’ deaths.

The 16th century was a time of immense change across the globe. For many historians, it marks a massive shift in the way the world operated; it is often considered the beginning of modernity. We may regard the 16th century as the time of Shakespeare and the conquistadors, but women also played a powerful role in many of the major events around the world. Revisado: 05-18-23
In this Great Courses program, Joyce Salisbury presents 10 interesting lectures on women from around the world who lived during the renaissance. It must have been very difficult for Joyce Salisbury to find so much information on women of this time. She has obviously done extensive research on this topic. I would love to listen to more courses by Joyce Salisbury. She presents her information in an interesting way!

He was a reporter during the Civil Rights movement, he was onsite when JFK was assassinated, he witnessed many atrocities in Vietnam, and he interviewed several presidents. He tells these stories with humor and compassion, while speaking in that amazing voice!

As consumers of medical news, how can we know whether the article we just read is based on solid science or is just an ill-informed attempt to grab readers? Professor Roy Benaroch of Emory University School of Medicine provides just the direction we need. In 24 fascinating lectures that address the most important health issues of our day - heart health, obesity, longevity, the opioid crisis, the stigma of mental illness, alternative medicine approaches, toxins in the environment, and more - Dr. Benaroch tells us how to recognize the good reporting and the bad.

Excellent information to help people critically assess medical stories
Revisado: 10-29-22
Dr. Benaroch provides laymen with tools to assess stories about various health issues in the news and on social media sites. He takes each medical issue and specifically analyzes information relating to that issue from a number of news stories. For instance, he discusses how many details were taken from an original research paper and whether those details were accurately reported. Dr. Benaroch also analyzes the research papers themselves to determine how well the study was done. Finally, he helps people to see through deceptive stories from companies who basically want to sell a medical product or medicine. I would love to listen to this program again, and I will definitely listen to or read other publications by Dr. Benaroch!

Very informative account of medical issues with historical figures
Revisado: 10-07-22
Dr. Benaroch is a very entertaining speaker. He talks about various health issues with well-known people from the last several centuries. You never know which person he’s talking about at first. You have to guess. This makes the stories more interesting because often we haven’t been told the whole story surrounding a particular famous person’s illness or death.
