Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Couldn't make it to the end
Revisado: 01-24-23
1. Why all the excellent reviews by the professional reviewers? "Exhilarating"? Hugh? I almost fell asleep listening to Part 1; a man who doesn't speak and appears to walk around in a coma, and then a marriage, a 'man without ardor' and a wife who doesn't like to talk.
2. I wasn't expecting Part 2, but suddenly, it's a blowhard rationalizing his contribution to the broken stock market in considerable detail; too much information for me.
The characters were not developed, I couldn't discern a conflict that would be resolved, nor did I have a clue know where this book was going. I do like surprises, but if the surprise is as 'exhilarating' as the the first 2 parts, I'll pass.

Another plane headed for Seattle has crashed into a field, killing everyone on board, and, according to the airline, Will was one of the passengers. Why did I dislike this book so intensely? The main character is a whiny, poor me, narcissist, and she is mean. I liked her husband who truly seemed to love her, but she was incapable of understanding that his misdeeds were a consequence of fear of losing her. How this book got such high ratings is a puzzle to me.

Historia
Quickly becoming a cornerstone of Holocaust historiography, this is a devastatingly stark memoir from one of the lone survivors of Treblinka. Why do some live while so many others perish? Tiny children, old men, beautiful girls - in the gas chambers of Treblinka, all are equal. The Nazis kept the fires of Treblinka burning night and day, a central cog in the wheel of the Final Solution.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Wouldn’t read it again, it’s not winning any awards, but the story was interesting in that mom was the ultimate, abusive stage mother.

Not worth free
Revisado: 10-03-22
This book was awful, redundant, and boring. Keeping a secret when all but one of a considerable extended family and unrelated others know? I don’t think so.
Throwing a long winded explanation re whodunit and why in the last few pages? Ridiculous.
And…one character was not whiny, mean, bossy, entitled, and/or immature. The spineless patriarch was probably the weakest man in the history of fiction.

Duh...
Revisado: 06-01-22
I cannot believe this book won a prestigious award unless the judges were pompous morons or there was a mistake in the vote count. This is the first book I have read that had no sense of an ending in the 3 narratives AND overall. A story is told, dropped, and the author moves on to a different perspective of narrative 1, a different version of the past, then picking up 10 years later. In this 2nd narrative, critical story lines, from my perspective, ended abruptly, without closure or forewarning. The third narrative? I don't know why it was necessary because there was no outcome that directly impacted the other characters' stated needs. (I don't want to be a spoiler.)
Details that do not contribute to the story line abound and add to the confusion, and events do not sync in narrative 1 and 2.
Although the narrators were acceptable in their own right, their voices were too similar to add clarification, most needed in narrative 2. The voice in narrative 3 certainly was distinctive but not required because characters from the past do not revisit.
What a mess....

Morgan is determined to prevent her daughter from making the same mistakes she did. By getting pregnant and married way too young, Morgan put her own dreams on hold. Clara doesn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her predictable mother doesn’t have a spontaneous bone in her body.

Sugar free candy
Revisado: 04-16-22
The narration of Morgan was so irritating that perhaps this biased me. Nonetheless, the characters were one dimensional, the story, after the initial chapters, no revelation to spoil, was predictable and redundant. This book was not even satisfying brain candy. Glad it was free.

Too many characters
Revisado: 03-22-22
There are a considerable number of important characters and in this or the prime universe. When one adds in multiple parallel universes, it was too much trouble to keep track for me. That being said, I had no connection to any of them, and wanted to silence both daughter and mom everywhere, the latter especially due to her slow speech rate and child-like voice.
I must say, though, I loved the narrator for the government’s chief agent , speaking with perfect tone and adding appropriate pauses that conveyed the perfect touch of sarcasm and easy, palatable contempt. I won’t be reading the next one in the series, even if it is free.

One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Awful
Revisado: 02-25-22
The 3 main characters were either self-absorbed, immature, controlling, manipulative, mean, passive-aggressive, or a combo of at least 3 of those adjectives. As for dad/husband, he “adored” the mother of his kids, a woman who would not speak to or look at them? I wish I had a paper copy so I could toss it in the trash.

Entertaining
Revisado: 01-12-22
Good narrator, bad guys, and people who love to gossip contributed to the entertainment value of this book. Some of the characters, including the main one, were either black or white. I kept reading because of the plot twists. It won’t win any prizes in literature, but I nevertheless enjoyed it and it was one of the better books in the plus catalogue.
