Historia
Nimble and expertly researched, The Devil’s Best Trick brilliantly melds cultural and historical commentary and a suspenseful true-crime narrative. Randall Sullivan, whose reportage and narrative skill has been called “extraordinary” and “enthralling” by Rolling Stone, takes on a bold task in this book that is both biography of the Devil and a look at how evil manifests in the world.

Great Story Telling and Narration
Revisado: 03-12-25
Wished it was longer! Would love a follow up! Loved how it jumped back and forth in time and story!

Historia
In the ancient city of Nineveh, on the bank of the River Tigris, King Ashurbanipal of Mesopotamia, erudite but ruthless, built a great library that would crumble with the end of his reign. From its ruins, however, emerged a poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, that would infuse the existence of two rivers and bind together three lives. In 1840 London, Arthur is born beside the stinking, sewage-filled River Thames. With an abusive, alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother, Arthur’s only chance of escaping destitution is his brilliant memory.

Stunning!
Revisado: 01-16-25
What can I say? I loved everything from the beautiful characters, nods to history, and the Yazoo culture to the lyrical writing and phenomenal narration. I think this book is to be added to my favorites list! I didn’t want it to end!

One of five children, Pat watched as her alcoholic mother struggled to get by on charity, cons, and petty crimes. At age seven, Pat was taught to roll drunks for money. At 12, she was targeted for sex by a man eight years her senior; by 13, she was pregnant. By 15, Pat was a mother of two. Alone at 16, Pat was determined to make a better life for her children. But with no job skills and an eighth-grade education, her options were limited. She learned quickly that hustling and humor were the only tools she had to survive.

A Trip Down Memory Lane
Revisado: 06-17-20
Having not read these stories since I was a child it was a wonderful trip back down memory lane to listen to them being narrated! It is also very timely to listen to tales of magic, culture, and freedom. I highly recommend reading and listening to these wonderful tales as both child and adult! Excellent!
