Historia
Geoff Shepard had a ringside seat to the unfolding Watergate debacle. As the youngest lawyer on Richard Nixon’s staff, he personally transcribed the Oval Office tape in which Nixon appeared to authorize getting the CIA to interfere with the ongoing FBI investigation, and even coined the phrase “the smoking gun.” Like many others, the idealistic Shepard was deeply disappointed in the president. But as time went on, the meticulous lawyer was nagged by the persistent sense that something wasn’t right with the case against Nixon.

Gripping summary

His previous two books are great, but this ties everything together with new evidence. Someday we will object to prosecutorial abuse.

Historia
Drawing on his insider knowledge and previously unpublished documents, Geoff Shepard shows that it didn't take long for Ted Kennedy and his allies to smell blood after the Watergate break-in. They set out to exaggerate and prolong the scandal, not merely to destroy Richard Nixon, but to undermine the entire Republican Party and pave the way for another Kennedy presidency in 1976.

Meticulously researched and engaging
Revisado: 08-30-24
The author expertly navigates a part of history that has been totally (and purposefully) unreported.

Historia
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

A decent footnote

I loved his Lusitania book, but this was a relative disappointment. I’m glad the history is captured but it was slow going.

Historia
Antonio Mendez and his future wife, Jonna, were CIA operatives working to spy on Moscow in the late 1970s, at one of the most dangerous moments in the Cold War. Soviets kept files on all foreigners, studied their patterns, tapped their phones, and even planted listening devices within the US embassy. In short, intelligence work was effectively impossible. The Soviet threat loomed larger than ever. The Moscow Rules tells the story of the intelligence breakthroughs that turned the odds in America's favor.

Too repetitive
Revisado: 09-25-21
This book seems confused. Is it a memoir? Is it an espionage history book? Also, it jumps back and forth in time too often and repeats the same information multiple times. It’s got some good information in it, so I don’t regret reading it. However, it pales in comparison to The Billion Dollar Spy.

Historia
In the late 2000s, Molly Bloom, a twenty something petite brunette from Loveland Colorado, ran the highest stakes, most exclusive poker game Hollywood had ever seen - she was its mistress, its lion tamer, its agent, and its oxygen. Everyone wanted in, few were invited to play. Hundreds of millions of dollars were won and lost at her table. Molly's game became the game for those in the know - celebrities, business moguls, and millionaires.

Very satisfying read
Revisado: 04-30-19
This was such a fun read. I was surprised how well the story was structured and written. Molly has such a fascinating story to tell and it really comes alive in this book. Plus, there is a really dark surprise turn towards the end which was thrilling. I took this as a really great underdog story about persistence. It was also satisfying to see a-holes like Tobey Maguire get served. I was saddened to see the author's twitter feed dominated by feminist politics. It retroactively took some of the shine off of this book. It is still great, but I can see now that the author thinks this story is a tale of empowerment of a particular gender, rather than something more universal.

Historia
By August 1968, the American space program was in danger of failing in its two most important objectives: to land a man on the moon by President Kennedy's end-of-decade deadline and to triumph over the Soviets in space. With its back against the wall, NASA made an almost unimaginable leap: It would scrap its usual methodical approach and risk everything on a sudden launch, sending the first men in history to the moon - in just four months.

Wonderful account but needless politics
Revisado: 11-19-18
You couldn't hope for a better account of the incredible Apollo 8 story. The story was truly gripping. I think the author did a great job figuring out what was valuable to the story and what was not. My only disappointment was the authors attempt to glorify the 1960's counterculture and draw parallels to current political troubles. I chose this book, in part, to tune-out some of the endless political babble. Yet, here Kurson is, waxing poetic about student demonstrations and, in the Author's Note, complaining about the 2016 election. The people who made Apollo 8 happen were smart, patriotic individuals. I doubt very much that Borman, Lovell, and Anders appreciated 1968's protesters and self-indulgent rioters, while they and countless others were working so hard and risking so much.
