Not Great Guests
Revisado: 01-31-25
This show was clickbait. The guests were supposedly going to help on mastering hiring, but their biggest reveal was that they give a drug test to see if the applicant is a druggie or good liar who has the intelligence to hide their substance abuse. Setting the bar low does nothing to improve the industry and its professionalism. One can imagine that starting with such respect for their employees leads to long and toxic free careers... Their segment on pricing was also underwhelming. 'No price gouging during a hurricane here, my friends, '

Historia
Come inside a jury room as one juror leads a starkly divided room to consensus. Join a young CIA officer as he recruits a reluctant foreign agent. And sit with an accomplished surgeon as he tries, and fails, to convince yet another cancer patient to opt for the less risky course of treatment. In Supercommunicators, Charles Duhigg blends deep research and his trademark storytelling skills to show how we can all learn to identify and leverage the hidden layers that lurk beneath every conversation.

Not as Good as Habit...
Revisado: 07-20-24
The author embarks on his own personal journey to discover how to communicate better. What we actually find is truly yet another, boring, relativistic, trite book written for this particular age - a book about diversity, equity and inclusion. Rather than a search for truth, one would learn from this author that our ultimate desired destiny is to attempt to understand people better (whether or not we truly understand them does not seem to be the point). The world is apparently magically made better simply through empathy and active listening.
Towards the end of the book, Duhigg tells the story of a male Yale research subject who came from paranoid and isolated parents. By all accounts this man appeared to be on an inevitable road to failure, depression and eventual suicide. However, the man finds a church, embraces Bible studies, becomes involved and has a radical, joyful transformation that leads to a productive life. Duhigg and the Yale researchers believe this metamorphosis purely happened due to finding connections in people. For some reason they close their eyes to the reason that the man likely would have given for his own circumstances... He found Jesus and Jesus transformed everything...
There is nothing in this book that is revelatory, earth-shattering or even greatly helpful. Rehashed DEI arguments and tired liberalism masked as objective enlightenment. Save yourself a read.

Historia
It is 1940 and William, 12, Edmund, 11, and Anna, nine, aren't terribly upset by the death of the not-so-grandmotherly grandmother who has taken care of them since their parents died. But the children do need a guardian, and in the dark days of World War II London, those are in short supply, especially if they hope to stay together. Could the mass wartime evacuation of children from London to the countryside be the answer?

Young Hosts - often overly combative
Revisado: 01-14-23
Sometimes I think the young guys who host the show think they can come off as Dave. However, they often come off as bullies and overly bombastic. Rather than being persuasive, they create painful listening. Dave comes off as a concerned uncle or cantankerous grandpa. Young guys don't have the same chops...

In a discontented kingdom, civil war is brewing. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point - he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Historia
During the most dizzying days of the financial crisis, Washington Mutual, a bank with hundreds of billions of dollars in its coffers, suffered a crippling bank run. The story of its final, brutal collapse in the autumn of 2008, and its controversial sale to JPMorgan Chase, is an astonishing account of how one bank lost itself to greed and mismanagement, and how the entire financial industry - and even the entire country - lost its way as well. Kirsten Grind’s The Lost Bank is a magisterial and gripping account of these events.
