Historia
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

Water sounds like city water
Revisado: 12-17-21
The water sounds like water draining off a street into a storm drain. The rain falling sounds like rain hitting a city street. The ocean wave lengths are way too short like they’ve been chopped.
The chapters are introduced by a voice. Very distracting.

Helpful to learn details of the Herriot veterinary practice
Revisado: 05-01-21
I wish the details about the move from Kirkgate to Skeldale had been described earlier in the story. I kept getting confused by the Skeldale name since it was used in the James Herriot books as a fictitious location. Apparently when they moved out of the original location where all the stories are based in the Herriot books, they built a new practice and they named it Skeldale after the stories.
Christopher Timothy does a great job as usual. The only reason I didn’t give it a five star rating across-the-board was because of one chapter devoted to the TV awards ceremony for The Yorkshire Vet TV program. It just went on and on and on and was full of celebrity name-dropping and it bored me to tears. The rest of it was great.

The music is distracting and unnecessary
Revisado: 02-28-21
I love these books in the series. But I don’t understand why the producer feels the necessity to add musical interludes. Often these musical interludes seem quite out-of-place and inappropriate for the tenor of the material. And often these musical interludes can be found in the middle of a chapter. It’s very distracting and very unnecessary. I wish they would just present the story without the music. And it’s not that the music was bad. It was just strange.

Chapter 6 very repetitive
Revisado: 01-22-21
I had a hard time getting into the book and then it sailed along quite nicely and then in chapter 6 when he came to the topic that is his career, it just felt like he said the same thing over and over and gave the same examples over and over and it got really tiresome.

Frustratingly detailed in places that don't matter
Revisado: 06-13-20
It took 6 hours of listening to even get to a point where you felt like something was actually going on. I fell asleep every 15 minutes (and I NEVER do that reading). Sped it up to 1.25 and fell asleep every 30 minutes. Up to that point I could've summarized the story in 4 sentences. Despite the fact that I already have 12 hours invested in this 18-19 hr saga (because it is our bookclub book), I give up. Despite liking the story and finding the subject and characters interesting, it is just too long and too slow. It is too detailed in places that aren't important, yet skipping details in the very spots where you'd her to explain more. She spends a lot of time giving you backgrounds of people you meet once and who have no bearing in the story at all which makes it even more frustrating. You think you need to pay attention and hours later realize you're never going to need that information that you carefully stored in your head. I have other things I'd prefer to read than spend another 6 hours finding out how it ends.

Historia
Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he's seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Short chapters a bit frustrating
Revisado: 04-21-20
The narrator did a fabulous job. The story seems rather disjointed for the first third. There are extremely short paragraphs where you just get interested and they stop. It is sort of unsettling when you're listening to it (because of the pauses) ; you would skim over if you were just reading it. I'm glad the author included enough of his true story such as the fact that he liked to paint. I actually saw Ivan in his home in Tacoma Washington years ago.

admired his persistent struggle to greatness
Revisado: 02-18-20
What I liked most about this book were the banjo interludes between sections and normally I REALLY hate audio books that use music and especially sound effects. I love that he sang little ditties and talked of how he slowly and painfully built his repertoire, reminded us of his jokes, and how he seemed completely willing (no, more purposefully intent) to mention all of the bad reviews he got over the years. It is an amazing story of persistence. I didn't realize it was such a struggle. I also like that he didn't get into the details of girlfriends and marriages, etc., which are none of our business. Good for you.

Way too many sound effects; overdone; hurts your ears
Revisado: 02-06-20
I liked the idea of the story although the ending left me a little disappointed.
But the sound effects were overdone. They should've just stuck to doing the music. We didn't need the smoke alarm, the bikes being thrown into the truck, the footsteps everywhere (including the wrong sound for footsteps on one of the surfaces). When you are listening to the story with headphones and there are things like sirens and alarms, it is disturbing and makes you take your headphones off to see if something is going on around you. Those should just never be included in books. If someone were reading the book to me, they wouldn't be making the sounds. But having the music, since that was the point of the story, was appropriate. And the female voice was just a little too strident for me but probably appropriate for a teenage girl.
Story wise, I thought attempts at suspense were a little drawn out. But it was fun how the whole thing progressed. Very interesting story idea.

A good, mainstream history of Queen Elizabeth II
Revisado: 02-04-20
For anyone who knows the history, there's nothing new. But it is a well-done summary.
There are too many sound effects which are really unnecessary in an audio book. Highly distracting and made the book take longer.
