Publisher's Summary Doesn't Do This One Justice!

I didn't want this book to end. The story is a story in a story, in a story, in a story, all of them EXCELLENT! I even loved the couple of short fairytales. I found myself walking around my office with my iPod because I had to know what would happen next! The plot is intricate, but not difficult to follow as the author is very thorough. I can hardly wait until the 1st to download this authors first book, The Shifting Fog. I was pleasantly surprised when I went on line and read the authors bio. She is a very young woman. The narrator was excellent also, sometimes I could not understand why she gave a particular character the voice she did, then as the story developed I understood. Bravo Audible!

Totally captivating!

I immediately looked this author up so I could purchase anything else she might have written. So disappointed to find this is her only book so far. I have not been this excited about an author since Laurie R. King. If you love a good British mystery try this one!

Hurry before price goes up!

I listen to many, many audiobooks, so there are very few that keep me glued to my carseat long after I arrive at my destiation now. After working all night I sat in my car until the last chapter. This one has it all mystery, suspense, atmosphere and even love! Best I've read in a while. Will definitely follow this author.

Disapointed but still a fan

I hesitated about downloading this one because I suspected it would be more about racial and social issues, and it is. This is not your typical Inspector Lynley or St. James story. Is it moving & thought provoking? A resounding yes. Just not what I wanted to read from Ms. George. I hated the ending, but realized it ended the only way it could have. Which in itself is a sad commentary on our society. See what I mean-depressing.

Commentary and Description of Vietnam War-Only!

I tried to get through this because I am a devoted Demille fan. I finally gave up 3/4 of the way through. If you're looking for a commentary and description of how horrible the Vietnam War was, this is your book. I understand how many of our men returned from that war scarred for life, but I purchased this book to listen to a fiction novel. The story line is weak, characters not even believable. I gave it 2 stars because it is a great book on the utter devastation the war resulted in phsically and emotionally.

EXCELLENT

I have read most of the Preston/Child books and have enjoyed them all(I have read some of the books individually written by these 2 and surprisingly did not enjoy them, together they are a formidable team). This book is a must listen. More importantly though is the sequel to this one "The Book of the Dead". I've never written a review and was disappointed when I was unable to write one describing how excellent "Book of the Dead" was. It picks up where this one ends and answers many of the mysteries revolving around the "Pendergast brothers". Now, even though my questions have been answered, I eargerly await the next novel! Scott Brick as usual was the perfect narrator.

What Was This About?

I was so disappointed. I took this on a 7 day cruise dreaming of lounging on the deck, pina colada in hand, plugged into iPod....
The author (I think) is attempting to convey a message. I just kept wondering "does the author suffer from some long-term debillitating disease? Is that why she wrote about this young woman that has just barely escaped the horror of polio?

Moralistic and Predictable

The protagonist is a "nice guy" attorney presented with an opportunity to make lots of money if he accepts a deal that will result in his client going to jail, but the family members of the killer's victims will receive millions of dollars. As the reader you expect him to find a way to save his clients and thwart the "big bad drug company". He doesn't and what follows is his rocketing accent into the world of millionair lawyers with private lear jets and rocketing descent into moral degeneration. As the reader you find you can emphasize with him, but because he is so predictably caught up in the "look at the big picture" and "well, he did do it even if it wasn't his fault" prevailing attitude, you soon find yourself just plain bored. The story goes on to show how he gets further and further involved in Big Tort Litigation, turning a sympathetic, but blind eye to the people really hurt by the companies. He is motivated by all the things we all are, and many of us would probably behave the same in his situation. But most of us want our fictional characters to have higher ethics than we ourselfs and to kick "big corporation butt". The ultimate loss of everything except the socialite girlfriend, who is one of his primary reasons for getting involved in the first place, is predictable. I found myself staying with it expecting it to liven up--it never did. But, classifies as a great book on moral decay and greed in the world of "Tort Litigation"
