Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Revisado: 11-29-23
This is a beautiful book made even better by Dominic Hoffman's performance. My book group read it and we all enjoyed it, but those who listened to it liked it even more. James McBride is a gifted storyteller -- I didn't want it to end!

Not for the squeamish but worth it!
Revisado: 05-23-22
This story should be rated R for its graphic descriptions of the early days of medicine’s acquisition of knowledge of the human body. The story jumps back and forth between the early 1800s and the present day, weaving an intricate tale of past and present lives. It starts out slowly but builds momentum and I found myself fascinated by midway through. Best of all was the amazing performance of the narrator! She made every character come alive and I marveled at her range. Looking forward to finding more of her work.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Historia
Lizzy Bennett always told herself she was too busy for love, especially since she was working full-time as a nurse at Meryton Medical Center and helping to care for her young niece. When her sister, Jane, catches the attention of young medical resident Dr. Charlie Bingley, she does everything she can to help her sister find happiness - even if it means enduring the presence of Charlie's arrogant friend, Dr. William Darcy.

Nice Idea/Poor Performance
Revisado: 11-30-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A better narrator! The narrator was amateurish. She was not at all adept at conveying emotion and differentiating the characters. She also mispronounced some words and was uncomfortable pronouncing others. Her performance almost made me stop listening.
The story was good but I was disappointed in the writing. Placing these well-known characters in a medical setting was clever, but the characters were not well developed, although I did get a better appreciation for how hard nurses work. Sadly, the narrator's performance didn't help - no added texture or depth came through.
Would you be willing to try another one of Trish Mckinnley’s performances?
No.
What character would you cut from First Impressions: A Modern Retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice?
I wouldn't cut any of the characters but the writer didn't do a good job at making any of them come alive for me.
Any additional comments?
The idea of retelling this classic story for a modern audience seemed good at first glance and I liked the medical setting. But this book is not worth listening to for all the reasons given above.

Historia
Amos Decker's life changed forever - twice. The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good and left him with an improbable side effect - he can never forget anything.

Likable Hero - Good Performances
Revisado: 11-12-15
What made the experience of listening to Memory Man the most enjoyable?
The voice actors do a great job! Baldacci is one of my favorites so I knew I'd be in good hands.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Edge of my seat? Not really, but kept me listening and rooting for the good guys.
Have you listened to any of Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I particularly enjoyed Oriagh Cassidy's performance. Really nailed each of the female characters and made them all different. Not sure if I've listened to either actor before, but they both did an excellent job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No way - very, very long!
Any additional comments?
Production issues in the first third of the book were annoying. There had obviously been edits that weren't done very well when the narrator's voice would suddenly change or not be as loud for a sentence or two. This was a distraction, but the producers smoothed it out eventually.

How a Dutchman in Japan captivated me
Revisado: 09-08-14
If you could sum up The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet in three words, what would they be?
Absorbing. Surprising. Satisfying.
What did you like best about this story?
That I didn't know where it was going. It covers everything from the Dutch East Indies Company's corruption to the crazed monk who's found the Fountain of Youth, to love and desire, religion and power and how those impact us all. It doesn't fit neatly into any category and kept me enthralled until the very end.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Aris and Paula Wilcox ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but they were wonderful. I'll choose another of their performances any time.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The coming of age of a Dutchman in Japan.
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to return to it. Although it's very long, I wasn't ready for it to end so absorbed was I in the world that the author and narrators created. Really an excellent Audible experience.

Revisado: 06-11-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who's a wordsmith. I really enjoyed hearing the author read it, too. The interview in the final chapter is quite fascinating, too.
What did you like best about this story?
This is an amazing tale that covers lots of different topics -- from the unrelenting dedication it took to compile the dictionary, to the possible sources of insanity in this one man, to the barbaric practices of war in the 19th century -- so it held my interest throughout.
Have you listened to any of Simon Winchester’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't.
