Comprehensive yet very readable

I’ll skip the many merits of Kotkin’s great work and instead laud the narration which gets nearly all of the Russian and foreign names right. That so many audio publishers are too cheap and/or stupid to do this right is scandalous.

Historia
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

Great 70's movie book from The Master
Revisado: 11-02-22
Tarantino’s passion for and encyclopedic knowledge of movies pours out of every sentence. And who knows better than the author how to make a sentence pack a punch? I’m keeping notes on all the films I want to look up or revisit.
The narrator captures QT’s rapid-fire pace and emphases. I usually play at higher than normal speed but had to slow it down for this listen.

Historia
Plagues upon the Earth is a monumental history of humans and their germs. Weaving together a grand narrative of global history with insights from cutting-edge genetics, Kyle Harper explains why humanity’s uniquely dangerous disease pool is rooted deep in our evolutionary past, and why its growth is accelerated by technological progress. He shows that the story of disease is entangled with the history of slavery, colonialism, and capitalism, and reveals the enduring effects of historical plagues all around us, in patterns of wealth, health, power, and inequality.

Impressive compilation by accomplished historian
Revisado: 04-05-22
As the most important third of guns, germs, and steel, Kyle Harper's book is a fascinating and comprehensive compilation of the natural history of the viruses, bacteria, protists, and helminths that affect every organism on the planet, especially certain of us primates.
(Helminths btw are worms and I should add that parts "Plagues" are definitely not for the squeamish.)
