Made for a woman but interesting enough for a man
Revisado: 06-12-19
Even though this book is geared very obviously toward women, I think there are some good life lessons to be learned no matter what sex you are. It also gives some insight as a man into one woman's thoughts and life experiences. Maybe it would help for men (and women) to be more tolerant of each other and try to understand each other's perspective. I thought some of the other reviews were pretty harsh when it is just trying to be a feel good book, empowering the reader to be a better person, and encouraging more self worth. Those are all worth listening too often in book form or otherwise.

Hard to follow in Audio form
Revisado: 06-12-19
It is a bit hard to follow while listening because it jumps around between years and I think it is important to follow in what year things are happening. Story is pretty good overall though.

Good first book effort
Revisado: 05-17-19
I think this has the trappings of a good series of books and a character in Lexi that I would want to follow again. It is nice to have supporting characters that are not the typical cast of characters and San Francisco in the 80's becomes a character in itself. I believe the narrator was inconsistent with her character's voices and accents. That became a bit distracting. The turn to the final conflict was a bit jarring and I would have like a bit smoother transition. It was unexpected, which I am okay with it, but it came on fast and maybe missed out on some build to the finale. All in all worth the time invested in listening to it.

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

Narration was beyond excellent
Revisado: 06-09-18
I had my doubts about Elijah Wood but he was excellent. It is a bit hard to hear the historically accurate, but politically incorrect language. However it adds flavor to the performance that one would not get just reading it.

Wanders a bit
Revisado: 08-24-16
He has several great stories interwoven but none feel completely fleshed out. It is a bit unsatisfying, but the journey is fun.
If the author reads this, I would love another book from the perspective of Denna and see how her story interweaves with Qvoth.

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

So disappointing...
Revisado: 01-26-16
I was really looking forward to this book based on the premise of a different world if the US had lost WWII, but it barely touched on a million scenarios that could have happened. It got bogged down in huge chunks of the story about silly things like jewelry and the whole Oracle thing was just not that compelling to build 90% of the story around it. The writing was in the style of broken English that a Japanese person might speak the language. Okay, fine for the Japanese characters, but to keep the general narration in the same pigeon English was just annoying. Plus the American characters spoke the same way. I can give some creative license that they had to do that in the new world order, but I would have liked more defiance when on their own, in their head or speaking to other US characters to show that they were only conforming to society because they had to. It was not really the same in the German parts of the country so it wasn't even consistent. Like my headline states: So disappointing...

Wanders away from the story a bit
Revisado: 12-17-15
I enjoyed the book overall especially the multiple talented narrators who had created strong identifiable characters. However, the thing I liked most was the various stories all happening at once and how they were inter-woven together, but half-way through the book it began following the story of the grandmother and her time as a young woman in the concentration camps. It stayed on this story for much longer than I would have liked without checking back into the other story lines. I felt a bit duped that I was not allowed to check in with the other characters. It was an interesting story, and one that needed to be told, but it broke with the convention of the story telling that had been established. It eventually came back around to the other stories, but a significant part of the book was spent on this one character and that is not what I felt I signed up for with the beginning of the book.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

He really brought the story alive and allowed the humor to come through. I was afraid the book would be all doom and gloom but it struck a good balance between serious and humor. Well worth the listen.

A great history lesson
Revisado: 09-15-15
The author does a pretty good job keeping all the various skirmishes separate even when they are happen simultaneously. It is good to see them as individual events but also how they impact the whole war. I look forward to book 3.
