Infallible hero and a perfect world
Revisado: 04-14-23
this book is less of a mystery than it is a mystery themed historical fiction novel. the main character has no discernible flaws for almost the whole novel, everyone around her is always amazed at her near superpowered brain.
I did like the style somewhat, and a sugar sweet story is fine every so often. I probably won't seek out the rest of the books, however.

Historia
This was no ordinary war. This was a war to make the world safe for democracy. And if democracy was made safe, then nothing else mattered - not the millions of dead bodies, nor the thousands of ruined lives. This is no ordinary novel. This is the story of a young American soldier terribly maimed in World War I - he "survives" armless, legless, and faceless, but with his mind intact.

This book jumps through time while staying in one man's horrifying stream of consciousness. It touches on politics and philosophy that feel tangible and present. Loved it.

Historia
Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans - though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the "Transition". Now, eating human meat - "special meat" - is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.

Best book I'll rarely recommend
Revisado: 02-16-23
Loved this book! It's incredibly gory and dark, but it carries with it a powerful message. I can't see myself recommending it to nearly anyone out of the sheer gross-factor.

Historia
Who was Friedrich Nietzsche? This lonely and chronically ill, yet passionate, daring, and complex man is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood of all contemporary philosophers. Why are his brilliant insights so relevant for today? How did he become the most misinterpreted and unfairly maligned intellectual figure of the last two centuries?

One of the most helpful series I've listened to in both my own writing and my own life. With illuminating examples from both speakers, these lectures made Nietzsche seem as accessible as anything else I've ever listened to or read.

It’s a war filled with larger than life characters. There will be sledging, accusations of cheating, theft and performance enhancing drugs. And allegations that Australia was cheated out of a Guinness World Record. In the process of charting the scandal-plagued race to breed the world’s hottest chilli, the audio documentary lifts the lid on the subculture of ‘Chilli-heads’, hardcore chilli fans spread across the globe who compete in chilli eating and breeding competitions.

Great Podcast from Audible
Revisado: 08-12-19
This isn't a traditional audiobook as much as it is a podcast series consisting of 5 episodes. That being said, these episodes are some of the more interesting and enjoyable episodes I've stumbled across.

A Disgusting Masterpiece
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is not for the faint of heart. There's human excrement and fluids alike, and intravenous injection pretty consistently.
But Holy COW is this a great book. It's heartbreaking and touching while still keeping loyal to the gritty reality it portrays. This book has reached into my top 3 or 4.
Also, the audiobook is a savior. I've always struggled through the physical copy because of the dialect, but this makes it not only understandable, but powerful. It feels incredibly real.
Highly, HIGHLY, recommend.

Historia
Nineteen-year-old Greg Sestero met Tommy Wiseau at an acting school in San Francisco. Wiseau's scenes were rivetingly wrong, yet Sestero, hypnotized by such uninhibited acting, thought, "I have to do a scene with this guy." That impulse changed both of their lives. The Disaster Artist is Greg Sestero's laugh-out-loud funny account of how Tommy Wiseau defied every law of artistry, business, and friendship to make "the Citizen Kane of bad movies" ( Entertainment Weekly), which is now an international phenomenon.

Great story, surpringly mediocre narration
Revisado: 08-06-18
Let me start off saying I liked the book a lot. It was funny and captivating. Moreover, it's fascinating to hear the story of, possibly, the worst movie ever made.
But for some reason, Greg Sestero, who also happened to co-write the book, seems to sound unnatural reading it. Odd to me, considering that he's a professional actor as well as the co-author. I'd recommend listening to a sample and deciding for yourself.
Still a great listen, if just for the story.

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

Historia
Abbott used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to offer pointed observations on the social hierarchy of Victorian culture. However, the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions, for which the novella is still popular amongst mathematics, physics, and computer science students. Several films have been made from the story, including a feature film in 2007 called Flatland. Other efforts have been short or experimental films, including one narrated by Dudley Moore and a short film with Martin Sheen titled Flatland: The Movie.

32 and omniscience
Revisado: 07-24-18
This story is good. Problem is, the narrator doesn't know how to pronounce a lot of the words, and it gets distracting. surprising to say the least for an audible production. for example, omniscience was said as "omni-science" and "3 squared" was read as 32. Find a different version if you can.

Historia
In this atmospheric and profoundly moving debut, Cathy and Daniel live with their father, John, in the remote woods of Yorkshire, in a house the three of them built themselves. John is a gentle brute of a man, a former enforcer who fights for money when he has to, but who otherwise just wants to be left alone to raise his children. When a local landowner shows up on their doorstep, their precarious existence is threatened, and a series of actions is set in motion that can only end in violence.

A Quiet Type of Loud
Revisado: 07-09-18
This book is lyrical, poetic, beautiful, and an absolute pleasure. Exploring various themes, the author creates a winding story that, although not direct, is incredibly intentional. Every moment, every memory is clearly present for a reason. I highly recommend this book. As long as you like more thoughtful and poignant works, that is. It's not always the most eventful, although it is absolutely riveting.
The narrator is kind of deadpan, but in a way that fits the voice of the character. Ended up really growing on me.
