Getting To Know Barry Sonnenfeld
Revisado: 01-24-25
The author is both surprisingly frank but also hilarious, I laughed out loud many times. There’s not much I can say that hasn’t already been said better by many of the other very positive reviews. I think hearing it read by Barry is essential to fully appreciating the book, he’s such a naturally funny and self deprecating guy it’s easier to get even the subtlest nuances of what he’s trying to convey. The book made me want to rewatch the films he made that I already loved, as well as finally watch the ones that I haven’t seen so far. I truly look forward to listening to the other audio book of his as well.

Historia
Danny Deck - Emma's friend from Terms of Endearment - is a promising young writer losing touch with his talent and drifting from Texas to California because "that's where all the writers are." Set in the early 60s, this is a very funny (and raunchy) satire of life in Texas and California and a true and American portrait of an artist as a young man.

The reader was superb, the story was a bit of a downer at times but overall quite entertaining. The reader really brought the characters in the book to life.

Historia
Set in Arizona mining country, Hombre is the tale of a white man raised by Indians, who must come to the aid of people who hate him when their stagecoach is attacked by outlaws. As thrilling as his contemporary novels of crime, double-cross, and murder in Detroit and Miami, Hombre is Elmore Leonard at his riveting best - no less than one would expect from the creator of US Marshal Raylan Givens ( Justified).

Classic Elmore Leonard Western
Revisado: 03-11-24
The performance of the story by Richard Poe is simply outstanding in every way, it’s dramatic without being overblown and he clearly delineates the voices of the many characters. The book is short, more of a novella, so when it was made into a great film by Martin Ritt not much had to be left out of the movie version. However there were many subtle changes from the book, some characters were consolidated and new ones created for the film which was all very fascinating to discover from hearing this original version. I enjoyed it immensely.

Terrific Adaptation
Revisado: 07-23-23
It’s surprising that this was never developed as a prequel and possible spinoff in the Alien series. Fascinating to have so many answers finally for what happened to the colonists. Having the same sound effects from the movies used for sliding doors, motion trackers and firearms was an especially nice touch. They should use this very production and make an animated version of the story as well, that would be spectacular. Highly recommended.

Masterful Science Fiction
Revisado: 09-16-22
It was fascinating to read the original story by Walter Tevis that the David Bowie movie and the recent Showtime Series was based on and see the many liberties the filmmaker took with the narrative. Some of the changes were for the better and in many cases I felt that some were for the worst, it was hard not to see the characters in my mind’s eye from the book as they were cast in the movie, which was a good thing as I could never imagine anyone better than Bowie as the alien from another world. It was a delightful listen made all the more so by George Guidall the reader, who did a truly outstanding job reading the book. He was able to conjure up a very believable distinctive voice for every major character in the novel, so that at times it was almost like a Radio Drama, thus adding tremendously to the enjoyment factor overall. Highly recommend.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Worth It For The Backstories Alone
Revisado: 07-05-22
The two Godfather movies are both quite long, but still not enough so that they could include many of the backstories for numerous characters and subplots. If you’ve ever wondered how the Corleone Family “fixed it” so Michael could come back home to America, you’ll get the answer to that and so much more. It’s like watching the movies again with deleted scenes added back into the films, with a full cast it feels more like a classic radio drama than a typical audio book. It was a revelation to find out just how many classic lines of dialog from the movies are almost verbatim from the novel, even many of the subtle character traits and actions of principal players in the book are spelled out in the novel in great detail. Giving the actors in the two movies all the information they needed to fully embody those characters convincingly, so kudos to Mario Puzo. He was setting out to write a Best Seller so there are elements of the novel that were deliberately salacious and make it more of a pulp novel, Francis Coppola and Puzo in the screenplay wisely focused with laser like clarity on the heart of the novel, everything that’s brilliant about the two films comes from his writing and this recording of the book just adds another layer of enjoyment for both of these cinema masterpieces.
