Historia
Compared to the Puritans, Mormons have rarely gotten their due, often treated as fringe cultists or marginalized polygamists unworthy of serious examination. In Kingdom of Nauvoo, Benjamin E. Park excavates the brief, tragic life of a lost Mormon city, demonstrating that the Mormons are essential to understanding American history writ large. Using newly accessible sources, Park re-creates the Mormons' 1839 flight from Missouri to Illinois.

Not quite as balanced as I hoped
Revisado: 11-05-24
The author did meticulous research but he seems slanted against his subject matter as at the end we find out about the post-Nauvoo lives of dissidents and the faithful are described rather salaciously.
The story was narrated very well but the continuous mispronouncing of Nauvoo, was irritating, as was Lamanites and Kolob.
I expected to be more uplifted than I was, I do know my church history so it wasn't that I was surprised, I couldn't believe that he wasn't able to find the history a little more uplifting.

Historia
Their Irish ancestry was a hallmark of the Kennedys’ initial political profile, as JFK leveraged his working-class roots to connect with blue-collar voters. Today, we remember this iconic American family as the vanguard of wealth, power, and style rather than as the descendants of poor immigrants. Here at last, we meet the first American Kennedys, Patrick and Bridget, who arrived as many thousands of others did following the Great Famine—penniless and hungry. Less than a decade after their marriage in Boston, Patrick’s sudden death left Bridget to raise their children single-handedly.

A fascinating slice of history
Revisado: 01-29-24
I'm rather ambivalent about the Kennedys in general but I really appreciated the research into this time period. So sad but enlightening.

Timeless Storytelling
Revisado: 01-23-24
I have always enjoyed the brevity of the language when characters are speaking. It seems like a beautiful relic of another time. I really like these people. Great Storytelling and a highly recommended book.

I first discovered this book when it came out and was lucky enough to meet him and hear him read selections from it. It is worth your time as it is well written, researched and performed. He is one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
