Promising Story Hindered by Simplistic Dialogue

While the plot shows promise, the writing style feels more suited to middle grade fiction, with dialogue that often restates the obvious rather than advancing the story or revealing character. Characters frequently explain what's already clear to the reader, creating a repetitive pace that detracts from the narrative flow. Readers accustomed to the sophisticated dialogue and nuanced character interactions found in historical fiction authors like Bernard Cornwell and Christian Cameron may find the conversational exchanges particularly jarring. Unfortunately, the narration is also mediocre.

Some of Atkins best writing, no doubt inspired by Hammett. His love for the characters and the city, and the times shows through in this novel.

Another reliable, one in the series. I have to say that the narrator is absolutely amazing. An outstanding performance that is critical to conveying the story and it’s characters.

This is the third installment of the Gregor Reinhardt series I have listened to or read. McCallin's writing is superb, with his characters being richly drawn, including that of post-war, occupied Berlin where every street and house is richly described. Coupled with John Lee's incredible narration, this series has been a treat and, in addition to being a well crafted story, it gives rare insight into post-war Berlin before the Wall went up.

While the storylines are good the narrator makes the characters into cartoon children’s characters. Dialogue is especially atrocious relegating a decent story to a Sesame Street episode.

A great author and fantastic narrator together. It is the life of Alexander woven with the thread of Ptolemy's early life. Once again the author uses his in depth historical knowledge, married with his amazing character treatment to make this very long book fly by. The narrator, who was done almost all the author's audiobooks, intimately understands his pacing and humor. Excellent all round.

Not up to previous books. Decent narration but the climactic scene was so ludicrous and corny as to pull the decent bits of the book down. Also how so many trained detectives could miss so many clues screaming for discovery was also frustrating.

I liked this series and listened to several earlier titles. Compared to some of the other historical novels I have listened to, this author no longer holds his own compared to Robert Fabbri or Chrisitian Cameron or others either in the writing or the narration.
A one word summary would be: Mediocre.

Fitting writer to continue the series. The narrator is one of my favorites. Well worth the "read".

I thought his last one was a better story, but his characters are so well drawn, the dialogue so humorous and unexpected that any book by this author is welcome. Great narrator.
