Historia
Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her natural historian colleague Stoker's brother calls in a favor. On the pretext of wanting a companion to accompany him to Lord Malcolm Romilly's house party, Tiberius persuades Veronica to pose as his fiancée. But upon arriving, it becomes clear that the party is not as innocent as it had seemed. Every invited guest has a connection to Romilly's wife, Rosamund, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago, and a dramatic dinner proves she is very much on her husband's mind.

Henry Bins is only awake one hour a day. Can you imagine only being awake for one hour each day? Can you imagine having to cram your entire existence into sixty measly minutes? Two minutes to shower. Three minutes to eat. Five minutes to watch TV. And in that 3600 seconds you have awake, imagine that you have to figure out...Who murdered the woman across the street?

Unusual premise; well plotted stories.
Revisado: 12-17-24
The plots drew me in quickly. I really liked the main character and his amazing cat. The stories are well written and definitely page-turners. I felt that the author broke an implicit pact with the reader in one of the stories, and I was peeved about that, but I still highly recommend these novellas.

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Not nearly as good as the Slow Horse series.
Revisado: 05-28-24
I am a huge fan of Mick Herron's Slow Horse series, so I had to get this book. If you have read some of the Slow Horse books, this is worth a listen, otherwise, don't bother. I'm glad I listened, because I got some of the Slow Horse backstory, but it requires slogging through loads of verbage for little reward in terms of advancing the plot. Mick Herron is a talented writer, and cleverly worded sentences are enjoyable to hear, but only in the right dose.

Cute, but has repetitive descriptions & dialogue
Revisado: 01-11-24
This was somewhat entertaining, especially because the narration was really good. Definitely funny in places and even a bit of food for thought regarding expectations that women are held to. I don't often read a romance novels, so I can't say how it compares to others of the genre.

Relaxing music, ridiculous affirmations
Revisado: 04-28-21
This could have been good if the spoken words were not so silly. I think it would put me right to sleep if someone quietly said calming phrases along with the music. But, every phrase starts with "I am" and the guy says things like this:
"I am admiring the softness of my pillow"
"I am taking a deep and graceful breath in"
"I am taking a deep and tender breath out"
and so on. There are many positive reviews, so it must not seem silly to everyone, but I had to roll my eyes at the various affirmations.

Sappy, Predictable, Superficial, NO Suspense
Revisado: 09-05-18
Wow - I have no idea what the people who loved this book saw in it. The outcome is totally predictable, but that might be okay if, along the way, there was dramatic tension or suspense. I kept waiting for the part where it would earn its high rating, but it never did. The main character is able to change overnight and take her life in a new direction with no backsliding. The (attempted) humor is overly cutesy and not funny. Way too many descriptions of their meals, which always consist of Coke and something greasy. Lots of little cutesy descriptions of decor and such too. I avoid romance novels in general, and this is a watered down romance novel without any sex or conflict.
