Not the best in the series
Revisado: 02-03-22
I have thoroughly enjoyed the series! Twists, turns and information that gives us a a glimpse of life during this timeframe. This book also had information, but the whining and “ oh woe is me by Lydia” was just too much. I thought Silkstone should cut her loose and pursue a woman with more sense.

Historia
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Interesting and Imaginative
Revisado: 01-02-22
The southwest offers much in history and legends, so this was very enjoyable to listen. The actor was believable in portrayal of characters WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PENDERGAST!!!
British accent?? Couldn’t she do a southern drawl??? This was a big drawback for me, having read the Pendergast series.

Some reviews too harsh, some too favorable
Revisado: 12-30-21
This is an exciting and action packed novel. Not my favorite Pendergast novel, but new and imaginative! Some listeners did not like the new actor, but I thought his portrayals honest and believable for most of the characters. Constance is an an enigma and he played her such, but once or twice a Bostonian accent snuck in. What was somewhat annoying was the volume. This is not a problem in a very quiet room perhaps, but difficult if listening in more active areas. I thought it more of a post production problem that could have been solved.

Uniquely terrifying!
Revisado: 07-21-21
What a story! Suspense, twists, horror and all the ingredients for a top notch mystery thriller! My surprise about the narration was that the interpretation of individual characters was excellent, but the narrative part of the story was performed in a strange cadence, almost sing song with a very predictable inflection that was irritating. I still highly recommend this to the strong of heart!

I love this series! It is so out there, but you find yourself taking it all in as logical! My only issue is that I am so involved with the story and characters, that I quickly finish and then have to wait for the next book!

Sherlock at his best!
Revisado: 07-30-18
I have loved the Sherlock Holmes tales throughout my lifetime and have read and re-read them many times. Caleb Carr has utterly captured the characters in personality and even diction. I do hope he plans to write more of Sherlock, as I am thoroughly greedy for more of Carr's stories!

What would have made Fifty Shades of Grey better?
An actress who might be able to give something other than a moronic reading.
Would you ever listen to anything by E. L. James again?
Absolutely not!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I couldn't get past that she was so stupid
