This is Angie Martinez’s authentic account of her time as a DJ on the radio station that gave Hip Hop a home in New York.

I am familiar with the author because of her podcast IRL with Angie Martinez. It compelled me to give this book, which I’ve passed over numerous times, a listen.

Angie begins her journey with her familial origins. She then transitions to the music that became the soundtrack of her life. Hip Hop. Her journey encompasses many of the monumental moments that were experienced from the Tupac/Biggie beef, to the Nas/Jay-Z beef and her desire to remain faithful to the culture she loved and embraced.

Like many women she was diminished and overlooked when “the boys” had an issue with her moral compass or her desire to do the right thing rather than what was expected of her.

I enjoyed the book. Some of the key players in Hip Hop have gone on to become infamous due to b their lack of respect for women which has me wondering how she feels about them now. I also have to go back and listen to a sampling of Biggie and Pac because I’m not convinced that Biggie was the greater MC.

Can You See It?

I almost dnf this book. It was a true slow burn. It was like reading one of those juicy soaps my mamma used to watch.

Elsa Grimes is caught in an arranged marriage to please her mother. A father who is more concerned with his failing business is blind to Ingrid’s ambition and manipulation.

Meeting Bailey at the Regal Crown boutique for her dress fittings will change all of their lives. You see Bailey has what we in the Black community call “The Sight”. It’s something she has been instructed by her aunt/guardian Charlene to keep to herself. Her employer won’t appreciate the service she provides to the clients in the low, nor will the people who are close to her be eager for her to see what they choose to keep hidden.

Reverse harem. The story had me right out the gate. The characters are interesting and believable. The references to current music and artists allow the reader to immerse themselves in the plot. Can’t wait to read book 2.

New Generation

I love that Kristen Ashley is consistent in her storytelling. I’ve waited on the continuation of the Rock Chicks forever.

Rachel is an amateur sleuth with a large extended family of the heart. Her own traumatic experience compels her to look out for the underdog. While searching for a missing child she stumbles upon Julian “Cap” Jackson.

Julian is next generation Hot Bunch. After deciding that Rachel is his one he embarks upon a mission to not just get his girl but to keep her and her friends safe as a former shelter nemesis hours her and her crew to expand her sleuthing.

Miscommunication

Banner and Jared both suffer from misconceptions about themselves and those they love. An inability to hear a person that you formally trusted costs them years of what could have been the perfect connection.

My favorite part of the book is when they realize that there isn’t a perfect soulmate. That they aren’t lacking anything within themselves or in their assurance that will categorize them as the “wrong” person for the other person.
