Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

One of the best books I’ve ever read, twice. I learned so much about life, about things that I had never known before. Things that sent me searching to explore history. The Melungeon people, for example. James Lee Burke is my favorite author but now I know that Barbara Kingsolver is my second favorite.

Historia
Clete Purcel—private investigator, ex-member of the New Orleans Police Department, and war veteran with a hard shell and just a few soft spots—is Dave Robicheaux’s longtime friend and partner in detective work. But he has a troubled past. When Clete leaves his car at the local car wash, only to return to find it ransacked by a group of thugs tied to the drug trade from Mexican cartels to Louisiana, it feels personal—his grandniece died of a fentanyl overdose, and his fists curl when he thinks of the dealers who sold it.

Repetitive stories, filler or fodder? Very disappointed!
Revisado: 06-16-24
Repeating anecdotes about past events occurred multiple times. Had the feeling that the intention was to extend or ‘add meat’ to a story that meandered and lacked a clear plot. A book focused primarily on Clete lacks substantial depth for a James Lee Burke novel. For fans who have listened to multiple books in the DR series one reference to a past event or a character’s experience is enough. Did we have to hear the ‘ice cream story with the negro kids’ three times? Clete is a sidekick to Dave, whose observations about life and lush descriptions of the culture and morays of the multiethnic people of southern Louisiana, and the Acadiana region feeds the soul. I frequently listen to a few of Burke’s books on repeat just to become absorbed and lost in his rich, iconic rendering of our people and heritage. I grew up in New Orleans and I have relatives from every city and small town from Houma to Lafayette and Mississippi as well. When Mr. Burke litters his stories with descriptions of dark people with blue eyes, or mentions something as simple as a china berry tree, a nutria rat, a garret or the neutral ground I am wist back in time to growing up around my great grandparents who raised chickens (and ate those chickens and their eggs), slaughtered hogs (and made hogsheads cheese) grew vegetable gardens and kept all manner of things in the smokehouse. We ‘caught whippings’ with switches made from the trees growing in their yards. James Lee Burke has the wondrous ability to evoke a spirit in time that still exists in some necks of the piney woods of east Texas and Louisiana. When I first discovered and listened to his voice a part of my soul was healed.
“Clete” fell short of my expectations and anticipation of its release and will not stand ‘the test of time’.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels began with this first hard-hitting entry in the series. In The Neon Rain, Detective Robicheaux fishes a prostitute's corpse from a New Orleans bayou and finds that no one, not even the law, cares about a dead hooker.

1992. All across the United States respectable, upstanding citizens are showing up dead. These deaths could be accidents, and they don’t appear to be connected—until a fatal fall from a high-floor window attracts some unexpected attention. That attention comes from the secretary of defense. All of a sudden he wants an interagency task force to investigate. And he wants Jack Reacher as the army’s representative. If Reacher gets a result, great. If not, he’s a convenient fall guy.

The Mack is back!
Revisado: 11-20-23
I’m a Lee Child / Jack Reacher fan, pre- audiobook, pre-Kindle and I’ve read them all. I was not so impressed with ‘No Plan B’ but I didn’t want my opinion to be influenced by any negative reviews about the Lee Child, Andrew Child authorship of the book. I wanted to give this book a chance although there was very little information given away in the sample of the audiobook. I enjoyed this book because it was classic Reacher and twists and turns in the plot right up to the end of the book. I would recommend this book to all Jack Reacher enthusiasts and I gave it 5 stars because the story and performance was excellent!

I love Archers’ Joe Gunter books, I love the plots and characters. The ending of most of the books however, leaves something to be desired. I guess that’s the price you pay to play.

In Gerrardsville, Colorado, a woman dies under the wheels of a moving bus. The death is ruled a suicide. But Jack Reacher saw what really happened: A man in a gray hoodie and jeans, moving stealthily, pushed the victim to her demise—before swiftly grabbing the dead woman’s purse and strolling away.

Don’t waste your credit for this one
Revisado: 12-01-22
I’m a die hard Reacher fan and I’ve read or listened to all of Lee Child’s novels (novellas too)
I kept this book on my Wishlist until it came out but I was hesitant to get it right away because of the bad reviews. After a month I took the leap and ordered it, just as Reacher might say, “bad idea”. No details needed, or just read the other negative reviews and use your credit on something that you’ll enjoy.

Historia
A United Nations relief team in a small village in the Congo makes an alarming discovery. An unknown force is leveling the evolutionary playing field. Men, women, and children have been reduced to a dull, catatonic state. The environment surrounding them—plants and animals—has grown more cunning and predatory, evolving at an exponential pace. The insidious phenomenon is spreading from a cursed site in the jungle — known to locals as the Kingdom of Bones —and sweeping across Africa, threatening the rest of the world.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-08-22
I’ve read all of James’ books and I found this one quite disappointing. It hardly read like a Sigma Force Thriller. It was about the Congo and wildlife with some Sigma Force characters thrown in for good measure. Don’t waste your credit.

Happy Christmas
Revisado: 02-06-22
I really enjoyed the book. The only thing that stuck out for me was the greeting of “Merry Christmas” vs. “Happy Christmas” between the British characters. Britain’s wish each other Happy Christmas not Merry Christmas. The editor of the book should have caught that too.

Historia
In 1970, three-day-old Marra B. Gad was adopted by a white Jewish family in Chicago. For her parents, it was love at first sight - but they quickly realized the world wasn’t ready for a family like theirs. Marra’s biological mother was unwed, white, and Jewish, and her biological father was Black. While still a child, Marra came to realize that she was “a mixed-race, Jewish unicorn”. In Black spaces, she was not “Black enough” or told that it was okay to be Christian or Muslim but not Jewish.
