Historia
Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer—they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

Teen romance memoir with broader appeal
Revisado: 08-02-22
I’m a middle aged (closing on senior citizen) woman so I wasn’t sure I would like this. I do enjoy well written YA fantasy books but not books about modern high school kids and their problems. Especially when the thoughts and language are very immature. I was pleasantly surprised by this. The tone was more like an intimate memoir than straight teen fiction. It had depth and it took me back to those sweet days of becoming a young woman and first love. There was a lot of angst, insecurity, and teenage self centered drama. But that’s also what made it relatable to me. I’m not a teen anymore. But I remember summers by the pool, or at the lake, vacation romances, being a tween turning into a teen and all of those new emotions and experiences captured here. This book brought all of that back and it was a nice little time travel escape. It was well written, the bouncing back in forth in timeline got a bit confusing at points. I enjoyed the narration despite some criticisms in reviews. I could recommend it as a sweet beach escape confection to other women my age looking to relive some memories from their youth. I’m can’t see adult men liking it though.

For years, Christians have argued, debated, and fought one another while "speaking the truth in love," yet we are no closer to the grace-filled life Jesus modeled. Biblical scholar and popular podcast host of The Bible for Normal People, Jared Byas casts a new vision for the Christian life that's built not on certainty, but on the risk of love.

Clinging to Jesus, while questioning modern religion
Revisado: 07-18-21
A lifeline read If you are looking around at the Church and wondering what the heck is happening. If you were just bopping along thinking all of Christianity was on the same page at least when it came to Jesus, then felt that rug yanked from under you, read it. If you feel alone and lost in your Christian faith because of politics or organized religion, read it. If you are suddenly struggling with family members over faith when you were once aligned, read it. It will convict you to love. I like how much supporting scripture is there. Many excellent insights. Both challenging, and liberating. Shows Jesus as the answer to all of your questions.

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Science you can put into practice
Revisado: 04-20-21
I was initially turned off by the title. Thought it was gimmicky. I also didn’t like all the use of expletives at first, even though I cuss like a sailor and am not offended by profanity. It seemed gratuitous and distracting, laughable, like when a puritanical friend tries to cuss. The author reads the book and her narration is okay but the audio quality is pretty bad. Don’t let any of that deter you! Get the book anyway. It’s an excellent and helpful book. Practical, no nonsense science that explains “why” and then provides practical help to change. I went from hating it initially to loving it!

Challenging in a good way
Revisado: 04-13-21
If you are feeling disillusioned with organized religion and disturbed by what is going on in the faith lately, this is the big brethren hug you’ve been missing. Thought provoking, insightful and scriptural. A beautiful reminder. So thankful for Skye’s voice in the world right now.

Loved it, excellent addition to the series
Revisado: 04-03-21
A well written, entertaining story. Great narration. Love the relationship of Charles and Anna. Included Tag in this one which I enjoyed. Bran has always been one of my favorite characters in the Mercy-verse. I always love learning more about his backstory. That was an unexpected treat. Lea is always my least favorite character but now I have a much greater appreciation after learning more about the character.

Tried hard to like it
Revisado: 03-12-21
I gave it 6 chapters before finally giving up. The narration and writing were good but I just couldn’t get into the story. Six chapters in and I was still bored and confused about what was going on. I think Leigh Bardugo is a technical good and talented writer but for me her stories are too convoluted and a bit slow. They require me to work too hard to stay on top of what is going on. I always feel that I’m getting just below surface level with the characters and they aren’t revealing themselves and engaging me quickly enough. I’ve tried a couple of her books, this one and The 9th House. I couldn’t make it through either one. Something about her style reminds me of Maggie Stiefvater, whose books I really enjoy. So, I WANT to like her story telling skills as much as I like her writing skills, but I just don’t.

Series continues to be good
Revisado: 01-23-21
Second books in a series are sometimes not as good but this one is. Juliet is one of my favorite authors and She is just an excellent writer. The pacing was good. Character development continued, wasn’t predictable. Very enjoyable. If you’ve started the series and liked the first one, you should definitely continue. Definitely need to read the first one before this if you haven’t. I like these characters and look forward to a third installment. There is a complete story here but it is very much a middle book.

Bit hard to follow at times but enjoyable
Revisado: 12-01-20
Briggs is an excellent writer, which shows even in her early work. I liked that it was just a good old fashioned fantasy tale with dragons, mages, wizards, and dwarves. Likable main characters. The narration was a bit flat in places. Could have used more inflection and pauses. nice voice and overall fine. My only real criticism is that the story was hard to follow in places. I had to rewind and listen to a few sections again because they were just a little confusing. Not sure if that was due to the read or the write. Overall a nice little tale, but don’t expect anything like her current work.

Middle aged, but loves a good YA
Revisado: 08-09-20
And THIS series is excellent. I’m adding Stiefvater to my favorite authors list. Wow! So talented. Her writing is poetic and lyrical but not flowery. It is sharp, intelligent and modern. This series is especially creative, unique and frankly just bada*s!! The story is rich and complex as are the characters. If you are ( like me) not an actual YA, you will still enjoy it thoroughly. When it comes to YA I need a mature, entertaining story that anyone can relate to rather than high school drama. This is mystical and fantastic. A modern fairy tale quality. The narration is pretty much perfect.

Good, Not what I expected, no retelling
Revisado: 05-29-20
I’ve seen reviews comparing this book to Beauty and the Beast. That comparison kept me from reading it sooner. It is not a retelling if that story. Much more unique and original. The author is one of my favorites and her stories are always well written. Her characters always have depth. If you like her other work, go ahead and purchase this. You won’t be disappointed. If you aren’t familiar with the author I encourage you to try her books if you enjoy ancient tales of quests and romance with strong and unique female leads. My only criticism of this audio book is on narration. All of the voices were well done except for the female lead which did not appeal to me personally. Not bad, or detracting, just a bit whiny.
