Historia
When Carl awakens from a coma after being attacked on a subway train, life around him feels unfamiliar, even strange. He arrives at his best friend's house without remembering how he got there; he seems to be having an affair with his secretary, which is pleasant but surprising. He starts to notice distortions in his experience, strange leaps in his perception of time. Is he truly reacting with the outside world, he wonders, or might he be terribly mistaken?

Good... But odd
Revisado: 10-06-20
I enjoyed this book right up until the very end. So I consider that a good book. If it holds my interest and has me excited to pull out my earphones and listen in the car or on the treadmill or while cooking dinner, it's a win. And I loved The Beach and couldn't wait to read more from Alex Garland. I love his descriptive style and his characters. This one was good, but the end was confusing. I feel like I must have missed something and will need to go back and listen again. But it was too short and left me wanting more. The narrator has a strange way of telling the tale as if he is a magician who has done his act so many times that his lines have developed an affected sing-song tone, but it was not a problem just a little odd. I guess it added to the mysterious, dream-like quality.

Historia
It’s been 10 years since a group of college friends made a vow: that the first to get rich would rent a boat and invite the others on a cruise. Now, the friends find themselves marooned at a luxurious hotel on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. While their boat is being repaired, they can’t help but observe the daily routine of a fellow hotel guest - a mysterious, white-bearded stranger who sits on the veranda each night and smokes one cigarette, sometimes two.

So boring
Revisado: 10-05-20
I usually don't leave negative reviews. I hate to be mean. But this was so tedious. It felt like an outline of a story or summary of a story and people are giving high ratings to the idea of it. I guess it is an intriguing idea. But this audiobook is lame. The guy from Peru's phony accent bugged me. When he made that whispery voice that is him being the female character, it distracted me. Why was the female character always so contentious? Her reactions about the things the Peruvian was telling her, seemed unlikely. Don't be thrown off by the cover art or description, either, this is not a romance. Only after about 2 hours of a 2 hr and 39 minute book do you even get a hint of who the two lovebirds on the cover are supposed to be and they are fighting of course. I fell asleep during this short book and was so mad I kept wanting to come out here and rant and rave in my review but forced myself to finish first, just to give it a good chance, since I hate when people give up and write a review when they haven't finished the book.

I Only Wish It was Longer
Revisado: 06-19-20
It seems like it ended abruptly but I can't be sure exactly how it ended because I was asleep. So that is good. But I do kinda wish we could have more since it is some good info and I really might end up making some of these recipes. I just remember at one point waking up and hearing something like "Turkish Aubergines" and then some ingredients and I fell immediately back to sleep. This and Pumpkin Stew are my faves so far of these Bedtime Stories. It is a really brilliant idea. I have actually bought a few other titles when they were daily deals just so I could play them at bedtime for sleep purposes. It just works great for me to fall asleep while listening to something that is fairly interesting but not a story that I will feel like I missed something important like I would with one of my regular audio books.

Interesting History Lesson, Not a ton of cooking
Revisado: 11-30-18
I enjoyed this book and it's one that stays with me as I go through life and informs my thinking about things now that I have more historical context. It also has inspired me to want to read some of Twain's lesser known works. It may be a bit misleading though, in that the book is not really focused on the feast. Very little is said about the specific dinner or menu Twain wanted to eat. No ingredient lists, etc. It is sort of promoted like a food network show and that it isn't, but I'm glad. Cooking shows end up making me hungry and snack too much. This used the food items on Twain's list as a springboard to then discuss where Twain may have encountered that food and its history and connection to our American history specifically. Very interesting and good book but if you're inclined to want to recreate historical menus it may not be what you're looking for.
