Historia
In I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea.

Unexpected and fresh
Revisado: 04-10-25
She writes so well and the stories are tender/funny/heartbreaking. She speaks with honesty, even when it’s not easy. I felt inspired. Highly recommend!!!!

Historia
Narcissistic, hilariously self-deluded, and divorced from the real world as most of us know it, hedge-fund manager Barry Cohen oversees $2.4 billion in assets. Deeply stressed by an SEC investigation and by his three-year-old son’s diagnosis of autism, he flees New York on a Greyhound bus in search of a simpler, more romantic life with his old college sweetheart. Meanwhile, his super-smart wife, Seema - a driven first-generation American who craved the picture-perfect life that comes with wealth - has her own demons to face.

You’ll happily finish it but wonder what for
Revisado: 06-08-19
This book has its moments of good writing: the “maparium” was a wonderful world and I enjoyed some of his meetings along the bus ride. But overall the book just went on and on and I couldn’t tell what for. I enjoyed the book but it’s just not a great book. The main character deals with having an autistic child and it seems like the author wants to raise awareness of how best to parent and love autistic children. I appreciate this venture but cannot comment on the appropriateness of the depiction. The readers voice seems too old for main character.

What made the experience of listening to Dark Matter the most enjoyable?
The story was engrossing and I wanted to see what would happen next. I was unable to predict the ending.
Would you recommend Dark Matter to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, because it was decent science fiction.
Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite scene is when the male lead and his female companion are exploring the "box" and discovering where the doors lead.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No.
Any additional comments?
This book uses the concept of a multiverse, which is very similar to another book, Timeline by Michael Crichton. Don't get me wrong, they are very different books, but I think if I had read Timeline first instead of after Dark Matter the plot may have been more predicable, but still entertaining nonetheless. The story is a good page turner but no work of great fiction due to it's lack of scope and character development (e.g. characters are either good or bad, no gray or growth).
