Historia
Seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Bertelsen dreams of becoming an astronomer, but she knows such dreams are as unreachable as the stars she so deeply adores. As a Mormon girl, her duty is to her family and, in a not too far away future, to the man who'll choose to marry her. When she unexpectedly finds herself in Colorado, she's tempted by the total eclipse of the sun that's about to happen - and maybe even meeting up with the female scientists she's long admired.

This book is amazing
Revisado: 01-19-22
Although this book was assigned for a class, I could not stop listening. This is a truly beautiful coming of age story about a young woman learning to balance her responsibilities and her dreams, her love of God and her love of science and learning, the life expected of her and the life she doesn't even realize she's allowed to want. I cried several times and I'm about to start it over and listen again. This historical fiction story calls up similar feelings as Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Patterson, which was my favorite piece of fiction, but I believe it may have been usurped by Beyond the Mapped Stars.

Historia
The Ancients, a race of creatures between gods and monsters, are trapped in Canderfey. Fighting for their home, the University, and the remaining residents of the town, Joanna and her coven are in daily peril. When one of the Ancients escapes the boundary, the coven is separated, Isaac traveling in search of a solution to the turmoil of the summer. As days wear on, can Joanna and her coven keep their warrior spirit, or have they been fighting too hard and too long? Perhaps the Ancients - older, more powerful, and impossible to kill-are an obstacle too enormous to overcome.

A great conclusion!
Revisado: 12-07-21
This book was so good! I loved how the unlikely friendship formed and how there were actual consequences that made the big battle actually mean something. If this series were a movie, I'd watch the heck out of it. I'll probably reread later. The only thing I didn't like was the male narrator's voice for Bryce. I also thought they could have used the strivens magic to make a lot of things easier and they didn't and it didn't make sense to me.

I like the story but...wow the voice acting.

I can't believe I'm so sucked into this series that I actually pushed through this book. The female narrator made everyone sound like they had emphysema and I could hear every time she inhaled. 😩 The story was decent though. It wasn't the best in the series, but I was entertained.
I will say Kristen Proby's female characters spend wayyyyy too much time fixating on how handsome everyone is other than their own romantic partner. It's weird.

I love this book so much!

I've read this book several times and it gets better each time. It's as though each time I read it, I understand everything so differently and the story hits differently each time. After first finding it in the library of my middle school, and returning to it several times since, I believe it is my favorite book of all time. Such a heartfelt story.

Historia
Austin Channing Brown’s first encounter with a racialized America came at age seven, when she discovered her parents named her Austin to deceive future employers into thinking she was a white man. Growing up in majority-white schools and churches, Austin writes, “I had to learn what it means to love blackness,” a journey that led to a lifetime spent navigating America’s racial divide as a writer, speaker, and expert helping organizations practice genuine inclusion.

I'm not alone!
Revisado: 01-07-21
I feel seen, heard, and connected after reading this book. It is beautiful and painful to hear the parallels in someone else's experience as a Black woman in white spaces. There was a point that I identified so intensely with what she was saying that I was in tears because I had never heard someone basically saying what I have been through before. I had to pull over. Austin Channing Brown is an exceptional writer who made me feel right at home while listening.
