Historia
It is the distant future, and Baird is a loner, a part time spy, and a notorious alleged thief. “Notorious” for the audacity of her crimes; “alleged” because nobody has ever been able to legally prove she committed any of them. When the hush-hush agency known as the Toolbox recruits Baird, being a clandestine operative seems like a great way to get paid to do what she already does anyway. That is, until a mission goes wrong, and Baird is infected with a deadly virus.

Utterly Delightful
Revisado: 12-10-22
What a treat this was, a wacky outer space spy heist adventure! So many shenanigans to enjoy, and all told in an engaging writing style with an excellent narrator. Escapism at its finest. I rarely write reviews and haven’t even finished the book yet, but I had to take a second to give my two cents since this book is free right now. Fans of Daniel O’Malley’s “The Rook” and “Stiletto” will likely find this right up their alley. Loved every second of it so far and I’ll be sad when it’s over.

Historia
A holiday novella. The Shoemakers and Ferraros plan to spend Christmas in Texas with Larry and Jane Ann's brother and then take a camping trip through the Southwest. But those plans are stopped cold when they hit a rogue ice storm in Missouri and they end up snowbound in a campground. And that's just the beginning.

Historia
Geocaching isn't supposed to be about finding dead bodies. But when retiree Frannie Shoemaker goes camping, standard definitions don't apply. A weekend in a beautiful state park in Iowa buzzes with fund-raising events, a search for ninja turtles, a bevy of suspects, and lots of great food. But are the campers in the wrong place at the wrong time once too often?

These books keep getting better!
Revisado: 06-08-22
As the title says, this book tops the last. A cozy setting, engaging characters, and an interesting story.
I gotta say, I love how the author rotates out the friends that Frannie camps with. The different personalities keep the books from feeling repetitive and leaves room for more meaningful, focused interactions that can progress the story while developing the characters.
Again, in this book I wasn’t able to pinpoint a culprit until the protagonists did so. The author did a good job keeping the investigation interesting by having many viable suspects, all with good motives and no alibis.
I also appreciated how the author balanced the help that the group provided with their amateur status as detectives. We got to see police handle evidence in a professional way, using gloves, photographing, etc, which was in contrast to how Frannie handled evidence earlier in the book (possibly contaminating it due to inexperience).
Additionally, this was the most suspicious a police officer has been of the group as a whole and their coincidental appearance in all major scenes of the crime. I found that fitting, honestly. If I were a cop, I would also be very suspicious of a group of strangers coincidentally being involved with every aspect of the crime I was investigating.
Overall, great little read. Looking forward to the next one!

My favorite so far
Revisado: 06-02-22
I loved seeing a different side of Donna in this book. Similar to Frannie, I had found her character a little grating before, but the time spent developing her character in this book did wonders. She is much more fleshed out now and I feel like I know her better.
The real reason this book was my favorite though, was that this is the first book in the series where I didn’t figure out who the culprit was before the protagonists did. The winding path through the clues was satisfying without feeling procedural and the decisions the characters made were sensible without stupidity-induced manufactured suspense scenes that sometimes plague mysteries like this. The one scene that somewhat falls into this category was self-aware enough that I was willing to suspend my disbelief for the sake of the excitement.
I am excited to read the next one!

Good characters, good story.
Revisado: 05-31-22
I enjoyed this story even more than the last one! It is well-paced and I ended up listening to it in one sitting. Note you don’t have to start at the beginning of the series. These books can be read in any order.
Like the rest of the books in this series, it takes place at a peaceful campground in rural America and follows a group of retirees in their outdoor adventures. If you’re looking for an action-packed thriller, this is not that book, but you might like it anyway.
The main protagonist is a relatable, smart woman who’s husband is an ex-cop. She likes to ask questions and figure things out, and is very easygoing and likable. Unlike some mysteries I’ve read, most of the characters make smart decisions most of the time. There are one or two exceptions, but given the context these are in-character enough not to bother me much.
The setting was cozy and the story kept me listening through to the very end. If you want something grounded but lighthearted, check this one out! It could be a good pick for you.

Historia
Alaskan fine arts dealer Caribou King has closed up shop for the season and is looking forward to a peaceful winter, capped off by the birth of her sister's first child. When she discovers the body of Angela Nash, an elderly woman, in the old Tilamu house, Cara can't help poking her nose into the investigation. When Alex Tilamu shows up at Mrs. Nash's funeral, drunk and ranting about murder, Cara is convinced there is more at stake than a dilapidated house on the edge of the bay.

Too much romance for me, but enjoyable overall
Revisado: 04-02-22
Pros: The setting and characters remain as charming and cozy as the first book, with captivating descriptions of small town life and the close-knit relationships among the community. The main mystery is exciting and interesting without feeling too fantastic or out of place for the setting.
Cons: If you are considering reading this to learn more about the story from the first book, don’t bother. The events of the first book are barely mentioned (if they’re mentioned at all) which I found a little unrealistic since this book takes place only a couple weeks after those events.
The romantic undertones from the first book kick into overdrive here. As someone who didn’t like the romance in the first book (or romance novels in general), this felt grating and uncomfortable at times. Also, if you have had bad experiences with intimacy and consent, the relatively aggressive way one of the love interests pursues Cara may bother you, like it did me. I’m sure some people get all hot and bothered reading about men touching and kissing them out of nowhere and asserting themselves, but I hate that kind of stuff and found myself literally squirming in my seat during some scenes just waiting for it to be over.
Overall, it was worth the listen for the lovely characters and setting, but I can’t see myself continuing with this series if the flirting/romance continues like this.

Historia
Only two seasons matter in Coho Bay, Alaska - cruise ship and winter. Caribou King, owner of The Broken Antler Gallery, is hip-deep in tourists when her old college pal Taylor shows up asking for refuge, saying she has no place else to go. Cara is cautious; Taylor was the wife of one of Alaska's most renowned artists, Jonathan Snow, who was mauled to death by a bear the previous year. Why would his widow want to return to the location of her tragic loss? Something about Taylor's story just doesn't ring true.

A pleasant surprise!
Revisado: 03-29-22
I decided to listen to this book after I saw an opportunity to do so for free with a credit from the narrator. First of all, all my interactions with her were lovely, and I got the books without a hitch.
Second, even though I don’t usually go for mysteries, I really enjoyed this book! The setting in a rural, tourist town at the end of the season in Alaska was cozy enough to make me want to visit somewhere like it in the future. The main character is relatable and her relationships with the supporting cast feel very believable with time spent exploring family dynamics and the close-knit community in the small town.
The story was slow to start with, but towards the middle of the book I was hooked. Once I got to that point, I found myself thinking about the book constantly until I was able to finish it.
The narration was pleasant to listen to. I feel the narrator did a good job bringing the characters to life with slight changes to her voice. She also did a good job keeping my interest in descriptive parts of the story where I sometimes tune things out.
The one thing I didn’t really enjoy was really a personal preference on my part. There were some elements of romance that involved the protagonist that seemed superfluous to me. I am not one for romantic subplots in general, so that may just be me. For others who don’t like romance, it’s not too prevalent. It’s sprinkled throughout the novel, but it did not overwhelm the story at all. Definitely still worth the listen!
