Historia
The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly?

predictable
Revisado: 05-06-24
the writing is beautiful, but the plot is completely predictable. within just a few chapters I already knew who did what, who was who, and what would happen. that's annoying. too much foreshadowing, not enough imagination. The narration was really good, and for a YA it would be an easy read.

2/3 is all I could enjoy
Revisado: 04-10-24
I had very high expectations for this one, and I love Julia Whelan. the first 2/3 of this was good with excellent descriptive sentences and words that put me next to the characters in Vietnam. I wanted to get a female perspective on Vietnam which is why i was looking forward to this novel, but Frankie was a weak minded unlikable character who just devolved as the novel progressed. I would have liked voices and perspectives from different characters to come in at some point. Maybe I just don't get it, because I don't have personal experience, but Frankie was unlikable from the beginning to me. I slugged through the last last 5 chapters.

Couldn't get past the narration
Revisado: 03-21-24
I liked the story, it was well written and I want to read more of her books, but the narrator, with the terrible, terrible Brooklyn or Long Island put on "accent" was unbearable to me. I want to get a refund just due to that, but the story itself was really engaging and great.

Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

epic
Revisado: 02-22-24
This story has made me feel like I've been on a journey for 2 weeks. It is so well researched, performed, and flowed seamlessly because of the magnificent narration. I cannot believe I've never before heard of this novel or read it. wonderful! I would give it more stars if I could. I cannot wait to see the television adaption, but I can't imagine it will do it justice.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

almost gave up
Revisado: 01-04-24
although I enjoyed the story and binged the last 4 hours, I almost gave up because of too much whining and self pity that was embedded in Violet. there was way too much inner dialog and complaining pity and it almost felt like the author was suffering writer's block and had to come up with fillers for a third of the book. whole sections could be skipped without losing the story and, unfortunately, HAD to be skipped to keep the relevant storyline flowing. I hope the next novel flows more smoothly and that unnecessary inner dialogue and over development of Violet can be avoided or committed entirely, or I may completely lose interest in the series.

ugh
Revisado: 03-11-22
This is a subpar author. Apparently, they only know how to use the same words over and over again. It had the makings of a good story, but the character development was awful. The main character is cringe-worthy, and the second main character is a PERVERT NAMED PINK! That should tell you all you need to know. I gave it 3 stars because I actually really enjoyed the narrator. I can't even give the author an E for effort!

Beneath layers of volcanic ash lies the Villa della Notte, home to first-century nobles, as well as to the captivating slave girl at the heart of an ancient controversy. And secreted in a subterranean labyrinth rests a cache of antique documents believed lost to the ages: a prize too tantalizing for classics professor Sophie Chase to resist.

good story, predictable characters
Revisado: 02-22-22
First off, I hate narrators that fake a southern accent. this one is especially hard to listen to. The story concept is a good one, but her characters, especially the main character, are so predictable. By the second chapter, I knew who the villains were as well where the conflict lied. the main character was beyond flawed, she was idiotic and unbelievable. but the research and historical component to the story was well researched, and I did enjoy the actual storyline, as much as I could enjoy it with such idiotic characters and ugly narration.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

meh
Revisado: 10-29-21
I do not understand why this is hailed as the greatest ever sci-fi novel, but perhaps I don't understand it due to not being alive in the time it was written. however, I thoroughly enjoy the ensemble performance style of the narration. it is a literary art and I can see academic inferences in the story itself. it felt more like a novel I was assigned to read and dissect in a language arts course rather than an enjoyable read for the story's sake.
