Intriguing story marred by horrific performance
Revisado: 12-03-24
The plot was interesting, if mostly filled by character descriptions and behaviors. Unfortunately most of the questions raised were never answered so we are left wondering about why Olivia and Gil were behaving so strangely, why Brad was so distressed and the killer, revealed in the last sentenc, committed the murders. The background music served to further obscure the appalling reading of the text, which was so mangled and had such jerky cadence as to be nearly unintelligible. Can’t imagine why editors would permit a recording to go out in such a state! I will not purchase another one of these recordings!

Historia
The young man with the shock of white-blond hair lay spread-eagled on the floor, surrounded by fallen books. His hand reached out to the scattered pages, as though he was trying to tell her something. But who is he? How did he come to be killed in Flora’s ordinary little bookshop? Flora finds out he was staying at the Priory Hotel, and when the gardener suddenly dies in its beautiful grounds only a few days later, she is certain that something untoward is happening in her quiet village by the sea.

Though I can’t describe this as a real classic it is an excellent work and the narration adds to it tremendously. The writing, character development, plot, and ethical dilemma all contribute to a wonderful read. I plan to listen to it again soon - very unusual

Terrible narration
Revisado: 03-29-23
The performance was so poor, it obscured the story. This book by Emma Lathen has so many characters and that, combined with the poor narration, left me confused and frustrated the whole time. The one aspect of the recording that I can praise is that it is good for insomnia.

Historia
In An Irish Country Christmas, the third book in Patrick Taylor's Irish Country Books, Barry Laverty, M.B., is looking forward to his first Christmas in the cozy village of Ballybucklebo, at least until he learns that his sweetheart, Patricia, might not be coming home for the holidays. That unhappy prospect dampens his spirits somewhat, but Barry has little time to dwell on his romantic disappointments. Christmas may be drawing nigh, but there is little peace to be found on earth, especially for a young doctor plying his trade in the emerald hills and glens of rural Ireland.

Quality Mix
Revisado: 01-23-21
I began this book with great enthusiasm and was not disappointed in the first chapters. However, somewhere about the middle of the book, I felt as though we had bogged down into little more than chick lit and constant references to “ the curse” with no progression in the story. There were few references or description to the stunning architecture, or environment, especially considering the settings of Venice, Florence, and the Amalfi coast. Descriptions of the fantastic food were paltry also and when a special meal wound up in a pizza joint, I almost gave up! However, after that uninspired selection of chapters, the writer returned to an excellent story line and finished well. Really needs 31/2 stars but parts and performance were good enough to bump it up.

Excellent representation of actual historical events
Revisado: 09-14-20
Amazing and powerful story elucidating the lives of former slaves beginning in 1875. Whatever we might have heard about how slave families were broken up as members were sold off, nothing can compare with hearing this “ personal report”. The Book of Lost Friends was developed by using actual ads in Southern newspapers as freed slaves tried to locate family members etc long after being separated.

Choices have Consequences
Revisado: 03-02-19
World War 2 Hero, Pete Banning comes back to Mississippi and his loving family. Unfortunately, things do not go well and his wife is hospitalized in a mental institution. Later, Banning takes action that affects countless others, especially his two children and beloved sister. This story is all about choices and consequences that impact so many in an unanticipated chain of events. As usual, Grisham educates us on the law, both good and bad. Fantastic Audible performance by Michael Beck who’s accents and speech ring true for all characters. It’s a long ride and the reader/listener is left in shock.
