somewhat predictable as a story. nothing Earth shattering here, take it or leave it, but the narration will take this average story and drag it into a real snoozer.

I enjoy this book and own the paperback as well, but this recording sounds like it was made in the 80s on cassette tape, and just isn't very good. recommend you stick to print on this one.

it's not bad, but it's not good either. if you enjoy thick Irish accents and mysteries, it's okay.

A disappointing follow-up

after a great trilogy, to have this be the follow up is very sad. Unlike the previous books, this splits the action between four point of view characters, and uses a separate narrator for each. Since each narrator has a very different tone and cadence, I found myself lowering my listening speed to be able to understand all of them, but this then made ones I could handle at higher speeds feel sluggish.

Worse, I found that I just didn't care that much about two of the new characters, and would much rather have had more time with Reaper. Overall, I'd stay away, maybe read a Wikipedia summary if you really want to know. I probably won't be getting book 5.

I turned it off after less than seven minutes of the narrator's sing sing voice that went up and down on random phrases in the middle of every sentence. the little bit of the story I caught sounded interesting, but I can't really say.

Unlike most of the other books in this series, this one was dull, lacking imagination and relying heavily on cliche, absent much of the humor that brightened previous stories. Nothing truly creative or unpredictable happens here; if you've ever read another fantasy series, you can basically tell what's going to happen almost from the start. You'll still read it, because by now, you're invested in the series after five books, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I don't regret listening to it, but I'm not rushing out to recommend it to everyone either. So take it or leave it.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Probably I'll return to an author I know, maybe something by Jack Campbell, like Lost Stars.

Any additional comments?

There's almost no character development in the entire book. It's hard to get really involved with a story when you can't care about the characters because they're all faceless. If you're looking for a good military sci-fi with character development, try the Honor Harrington, Lost Fleet, or Ark Royal series.

Great adaptation

The voice actors do a wonderful job of immersing you into Ender's world, from the banter to the heartfelt emotional scenes and everything in between.

Overall, the adaptation works, as any scenes which would normally be narrated omnisciently are now framed as Battle School staff watching video and analyzing what's going on. However, like the recent film, this version almost completely cuts out Locke and Demonsthenes (there is a very short scene where they are discussing the initial plan, and a passing reference later, but that's it). I know that those scenes would be difficult to do in this format, but it feels like an important part of the novel is missing.

Still, if you're a fan and you've read/listened to an unabridged version, this is very enjoyable, and I recommend it.

If you could sum up Storm from the Shadows in three words, what would they be?

Talbot, Henke, Mesa

What did you like best about this story?

Nicely developed the story of the Tablot Cluster, including a brief recap of what happened in the prior Saganami book, but from Queen Elizabeth's perspective instead of just from Terekhov's. Expect some repeat (verbatim) from some other Honor books, but at this point it's still fairly minimal.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jay Snyder?

Allyson Johnson, who recorded all the main-line Honor audiobooks.

Any additional comments?

This book takes place concurrently with mainline Honor 11 (At All Costs) and Saganami 1 (Shadow of Saganami) [and parts of Torch 2: Torch of Freedom, although the things that happen here are generally just referenced, and done in such a way that you can understand what you need to]. It should not be read as a standalone, and moreover, it cannot even be read as just a continuation of the previous Saganami series book, since it makes too much reference to things going on in the Honorverse at large. Finally, it ends on a dramatic cliffhanger that is resolved in Honor 12 (Mission of Honor). Readers should be familiar with the previous works as indicated and be prepared to read Mission of Honor immediately after this for resolution of the cliffhanger.

The narrator should be banned from ever reading any works with female characters again, as his "female" voice is just awful. He does a fine job with the non-dialogue reading, although he does not follow the established (by Allyson Johnson, who reads all the main series for Honor Harrington) pronunciations for certain words. Because the main character of this book is Michelle Henke, and further, has a number of important supporting female characters, this makes for a miserable listening experience. I strongly recommend that you purchase or borrow the print or Kindle (etc.) version of this book, and pass on the audiobook.
