Historia
For a moment, things seemed to be under control for Breq, the soldier who used to be a warship. Then a search of Athoek Station's slums turns up someone who shouldn't exist, and a messenger from the mysterious Presger empire arrives, as does Breq's enemy, the divided and quite possibly insane Anaander Mianaai—ruler of an empire at war with itself. Breq refuses to flee with her ship and crew, because that would leave the people of Athoek in terrible danger. The odds aren't good, but that's never stopped her before.

A sci fi author who addresses very human topics
Revisado: 01-15-24
I think this was the best book in the series. I very much enjoyed it. What I really like about Anne Leckie is her choice of exploring unfamiliar topics in the sci fi world like mental health and emotional resilience. I also love her use of flawed characters like lieutenant Siverden. Other themes explored in this book include the definition of person hood, artificial intelligence, and tyranny.

Historia
Lynesse is the lowly Fourth Daughter of the queen, and always getting in the way. But a demon is terrorizing the land, and now she's an adult (albeit barely) with responsibilities (she tells herself). Although she still gets in the way, she understands that the only way to save her people is to invoke the pact between her family and the Elder sorcerer who has inhabited the local tower for as long as her people have lived here (though none in living memory has approached it).

Interesting Concept
Revisado: 11-23-23
An anthropologist finds himself stranded in a non technological civilization. I enjoyed this book. I found the narration difficult to hear at times as the narrator has a tendency to end his sentences quietly. However I found the plot and characters interesting. Dealing with mental illness, the value of different personality types, and the way technology can seem like magic to non advanced people are some of the themes explored.

A grand odyssey
Revisado: 09-30-23
This book is definitely worth the read it’s a true work of artistic fiction. However, audio may not be the best media to experience this book as there are many stops, side plots, different main characters and chapters that aren’t part of the main storyline. More than anything this book is a triumph for the lgbtq community as three of the main characters are trans or gay. I really have to hand it to the author for creating the character of k. Amal Carne. Such an interesting character! And so unique.

phenomenal
Revisado: 11-10-20
overall this book kept me interested from beginning to end. the wide story arc covers many thousands of years and includes interesting characters. I will say there really isn't one main character to follow, rather there are a few main characters that the author spends more time on. that being said, this book isn't very character driven. it's plot driven. I like a good balance of both but this book still kept things interesting for me. I also found the content very original-- not your typical sci fi novel where the world is about to end due to humans polluting it or aliens invading. it was a completely new spin on the world ending theme. also this book is quite long. in all honesty the author could have broken it up into two books. but you get more bang for your buck with the length. the only downside that I could find was the amount of technobabble that the author felt the need to include. he really could have foregone a lot of it and still communicated just the few key facts about space travel needed to keep the reader engaged.

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Historia
Thousands of years ago, Earth’s terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life - but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity’s great empire fell, and the program’s decisions were lost to time. Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth. But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed. And it’s been waiting for them.

bizarre premise but great read
Revisado: 06-18-19
initially I had my doubts about this book because the premise is slightly bizarre. as the story gets rolling though the authors grasp of detail and concept for the universe he has created really pull you in. lots of plot twists kept me interested. the characters were interesting and uniquely flawed...making them very believable. the author makes you hold your breath for the ending but don't worry it's very satisfying. my only complaint is that there is a lot of swearing.

how to justify all your life choices
Revisado: 06-05-19
some good insights here but I think she wrote this to justify her choice of neglecting her kids. I'm sorry but you can't be a workaholic constantly going to business trips and conferences and expect to give your kids all they need. sorry you just can't do it all. no one is going to love your kids like you do. period. not their teacher, not their babysitter. the mantra of this book is you are good enough the way you are blah blah blah. yes women do need to be more positive but our society as a whole has lost the art of realistic criticism. Rachel misses the boat on that one.

I definitely feel like the pimsleur courses help me learn Spanish. The vocabulary is explained well and there are plenty of opportunities to practice. I do wish there was more review of earlier chapters. one more critique I have is that I often have to pause the audio book or I don't have enough time to think of the correct response. I wish there was more wait time.
